Midi out/thru question (merge?)

Hey. I have a simple question
i'd like to:
connect for example a piano/keyboard with midi cable to pod hd500x midi IN
then connect Pod's midi out/thru to pc with midi/usb interface

then use pod hd switches to control ableton functions via midi, and at the same time control my vst virtual instrument with keyboard.

so: is it possible to use pod as midi controller and send midi notes from piano to pc at the same time (with one usb/midi interface)?

Sorry for my english (polish native)
Thanks in advance
Kacper

Not true! I'm playing my midi keyboard thru my POD as we speak, and controlling assorted amp sims running in Sonar with the POD's buttons using PCs/CCs. The keyboard "plays" Dimension Pro and True Piano in Sonar, no problem. Insofar as Ableton responds to Note On/Off signals, you should have no trouble as the POD sends BOTH Note ON (on press) and Note OFF (on release). I wasn't sure about that, so I just tested it in MidiOx, works fine.

Very interesting. Please double check your connections and settings. Do you also have your keyboard connected to the computer via USB? What midi device is your DAW configured to use?

I think the OP is talking about the situation where your keyboard is connected only to the POD HD MIDI IN/THRU port, with no direct connection to the computer, and also where the DAW recognizes the POD as its midi device. Please confirm that this is your setup. If so, it seems that Line 6 has made a major upgrade in its midi implementation without announcing it.

FWIW, I can connect an iPad (old one) with MIDI Memo app and record midi sent through HD500 and DT50. I plug the MIDI Mobilizer midi in to the DT's midi out and the midi out to the HD500's midi in and connect the HD500's midi out to the DT's midi in. When I hit record on the iPad, any moves I make on either device is sent through and back to the iPad and recorded. I know it's not the preferred method of MIDI implementation but it has it's uses for me. If I orchestrate myself properly/successfully I can playback the midi that's been recorded and just play. Obviously this has it's limitations but is usable for some stuff. Very interesting this MIDI.

I'm not tethered to a laptop or desktop.

Yes, but the midi devices are the DT and the HD500. You will be able to record all midi commands and messages that these two devices support. To my knowledge, this excludes the note on/off commands which neither of these devices support to the best of my knowledge. You can't mimic playing a keyboard using these devices. It's those specific commands that are in question here.

Thanks for the clarification silverhead. That's why I put "FWIW" at the beginning of my post. I'm not really proficient with MIDI, mainly I play around with it every now and then and learn a little more each time, lol.

The only keyboard I've got is the KB37 Studio (Ableton Live Lite 8) and if I want to mix that in I would plug analog L & R 1/4" outs into a BeatBuddy (stereo) which is plugged into the FX Loop (stereo) of the HD500, then out of the Pods L & R 1/4" one of which will go into the FX Return a DT50HD and the other into a Peavey VKII 20 mini. So I guess the only "note on/off" that's going on is in my computer, lol.

MIDI KB => POD MIDI IN (DIN cable)

POD MIDI OUT => $5 cheapo DIN/USB interface  => Laptop

POD MIDI configured to OUT/THRU

Sonar is configured to use the cheapo interface for MIDI. If you meant that the POD won't transmit MIDI (at all) over it's own USB interface, you are correct, it's audio only. You need a way to get the MIDI from the POD to the computer, thus the cheapo interface, which the OP seems to be aware of the need for:

"connect for example a piano/keyboard with midi cable to pod hd500x midi IN

then connect Pod's midi out/thru to pc with midi/usb interface"

My HD500X is on v2.62.

I've found (so far) that the only thing I can't use the POD's MIDI for is to step thru the presets in most of my amp sims. The only one it works in is TH2, because TH2 responds to NOTE. The others (Amplitube, Guitar Rig, S-Gear) require that you send the same CC# twice, once with 127 value and again with 0. The POD can't send more than one CC per press. For that matter, more than one of anything per press. From what I gather, the HELIX uses essentially the same MIDI implementation (correct me if I'm wrong?), another reason I won't be putting out the big bucks anytime soon. But if the dough was sitting in my bank account getting dusty.....

Yes - that's what I meant. That the POD won't replace the need for a separate midi interface. I had overlooked the OP's reference to that.

I've never tried that - always just routed the KB midi directly to the midi interface, but I guess if you want to use midi originating from both the KB and the POD simultaneously, and your midi interface has only one IN port, then that's the way to do it.

Never having tested that I had thought that the POD would just not recognize/pass thru the note commands. I continue to learn stuff here. Thanks for the education.
