webby65
Hi Can anyone tell how to set a standard volume level on my hd500x. What I want to do is keep to volume level the same when switching between presets, i,e when I am on one preset I need to turn the volume up, then when I switch to another its to loud and I need to turn the volume down. Can the level be set equal for all presets? Webby
Dutchguitarist
Yes you can solve the volume differences. Getting rid of volume differences between patches is a time consuming business. As a rule of thumb I start with the clean patch within a bank (I use ABCD mode) and use the dB meter from my Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) to set the initial volume, which should not exceed a recording level of -12dB because I need some headroom after recording. The other 3 patches are primarily done by ear but should not exceed the -10dB point preferably. If you want presets to be consistent in volume in respect to one another, you could monitor the volume of each preset with a dB meter and this will function to some extent. However there is something called perceived volume, in other words how do you hear it, so my advice is to use your ears for the related patches in the bank. Levelling patches across banks is a more difficult issue as amp models do not have the same initial volume. So if you are planning to use various amp models it is wise start with the one that is the quietest in volume and adjust the louder ones afterwards, because the other way around will simple not work (at least not that easy). Hope this helps.
silverhead
There is no global volume levelling feature. You need to balance the relative volumes one preset at a time. Start with the quietest, cleanest presets then move on crunch tones and finally your high gain tones. Use the amp channel volume as much as possible; it does not affect the tone. If necessary you can use the mixer levels. Avoid using the gain/drive or the amp master volume. These affect tone. The device master volume is not saved with the preset; you should only use it once at the beginning of each session to set overall volume for the room/venue and then leave it alone.
Indianrock2020
I just went through this on my patches, using a db meter app on my phone. Good thoughts above. I might add that in my case I'm setting the volume pedal effect last in every patch and setting it from 70% to 100% --minimum/maximum. My reasoning there is musicians on stage should not be bumping their signal output by very much when others are receiving that in their in-ear monitors. If i just need to boost a patch's volume, the mixer controls would be first, making sure they don't cause clipping if raised too high, then the amp channel volume, then the gain on a compressor.
