New Firmware Expectations

Maybe it will be 3.0 with Major updates, it's been long enough since the last one, about 9 months!!

Closer to a year - remember that they dropped the HD300/400 update (as a sign of goodwill, remember?) a good two or three months before the 500/pro/bean, and they didn't really add anything new other than some minor dream rig functionality to it, so really it's been like a year since the last update. That's a LONG time in terms of software.

Haha, gotcha. I wasn't sure if you were being sarcastic, or not. Even so, my god, my plexi on 8 would level the block.

I'm surprised you are getting such little gain through the plexi model with the SG. I'm sure you've already checked the pad switch and all that. Hmm...other than throwing the tube comp in front with a transparent threshold and a couple dB gain boost, I'm out of suggestions.

Yes I checked the Pad switch and yes I use a Tube Comp or other effects, as I was saying. I was only wondering why I have to do it, since as you say, the original amp distortion would "level the block", without using effects :)

What guitar players  . I don't see any guitar players around here  . It's more like a bunch of computer geeks waiting for updates to their gadgets and a few Cyborg typists "Experts" who can answer most questions relating  to the operation of  those gadgets.

Thats about what I would expect... L6 sells equipment not guitar knowledge....

http://truefire.com/    When I'm on Truefire they can't tell me how to set up a HD500....  but if I have a question on the Dorian mode ... no problem...  Its like going to a Home Depot on Friday night trying to get lade... and then on Saturday going to the hot club looking to buy Scotts Step 4 fertilizer!

I'm glad you caught on to the fact  that I was Joking in the spirit of proving that you were right when you said that guitar player are A-holes. I tried to demonstrate that and you got it,  but unfortunately others aren't as bright as you. The experts are the best thing about these boards and in general they all have the emotional intelligence that enables them not be fan boys and not only that, they have a sense of humor. :)

Now why would you say that!? What's your excuse? Don't strain yourself wondering. I will have to  limit my response to 2 lines to insure that you can finish reading it. Didn't do good in school did you? have you heard of humor? Sorry I had to go over 2 lines.

I was, of course, joking as well.  I am curious, has Line 6 officially said there will be at least one more update?  I've been a Line 6 boy for awhile and the HD500 doesn't have all the input output recording capabilities as the X3 Live and I expect eventually it will.  So I am expecting one but I don't think anything official (or even a reliable rumor) has been said.

I was told in the beta way back by a reliable source that it will never get the recording update like the x3, because of hardware limitations... (same reason it won't ever get separate 1/4"-xlr outs)

That hurt's.  Especially the separate 1/4" XLR outs.

I find it hard to believe that USB 2 has limitation verses the USB in the POD X3. At the driver level they can create more outputs at least...

Since we're joking about guitar players:

How many guitar players does it take to screw in a light bulb ?  One, but he goes for hours about how great he did it.

How many bass players does it take to screw in a light bulb ?  Still just one, but the guitarist had to show him how.

And last but not least.

What is the last thing a drummer says in a band ?  Hey guys, lets try one of my songs.

Ok, one more.

And one time our bass guitarist almost didn't make it to the gig.  He locked his keys in the car and it took him 4 hours to get the drummer out.

it's not the streams.. its the processing behind them...

If that's the case, it solidifies what I've always said, the HD series was clearly designed for the performing guitarists in mind rather than the recording guitarist;  factor in EQ that doesn't show frequencies, DT50 interaction, L2 functionality and the case is ironclad.

I'm quite sure that's the case. The X series show an obvious slant in that direction with the Live versions coming out (I believe) simultaneously but still maintained studio roots. The HD series debuted without a desktop model available. Pretty clear sign.

Besides, who cares what an artist records with in the studio? You gain more credibility on the live side. How many people ran out and bought an old Fender Champ so they could capture that overdriven studio tone famous on many rock albums? Some, but very few. It originally sold as a cheap starter amp until someone cranked it up and heard the beast within. It's a great amp for that purpose. The big advertising exposure and market credibility comes when an artist is photographed onstage with that Line 6 logo on the floor or behind them on their amp or even on the venue's PA. That's more of what Line 6 seems interested in.

And yet, the outputs were totally overlooked for live use. No different cab/ no cab separations on the outs to the house, and to the stage amp.....

How do you get rid of a guitar player?  Put a sheet of music in front of him.

What's the difference between a pizza and a guitar player?  A pizza can feed a family of four.

How do you make a million dollars playing folk guitar.  First ya start out with two million...

How do you get a guitar player off your porch?  Pay for the pizza.

What do you call a male guitar player with no girlfriend?  Homeless.

What do you call a guitar player in a suit.  The defendant.

How long does it take to tune a 12 string guitar?  Nobody knows.

Anyway, just to stick with the topic, I really hope that Line 6 guys will continue to update and correct bugs on Pod HD.

This is why I choosed Line 6 : excellent follow up and continuous improvement of their products ... but regarding company size (215 employees for 100M$ of revenue) we can doubt about the fact they can sustain support for old produits while new one are taking the front of the scene.

I feel that things really changed since Pod era ...

So my expectations are :

- Bug correction regarding Tuner activation with FBV Mkii Express and Pod HD Desktop

- Improved Eq with frequencies adjustement

- New bass amps

Ive been toying around with Amplitube 3 as of late. Pretty damn decent tones there too for pure software. Im thinking Line 6 better get their moneys worth in the hardware arena now, cause in the next 5 years (and esp in the studio) we wont be needing it for the most part...  ;)

As Iknowathingortwo stated. The fact that the Master Volume is tied to both the 1/4" and XLR ouputs and you aren't able to "disconnect" one is, to me, a glaring omission that proves the opposite of what you've stated.  Having a steady signal to the PA and a variable signal to your on stage amp is a very basic Live option.  If it's true that any updates will not include any of the recording options of the X3 and/or the aforementioned Master Volume option, I think they just wanted to get their HD stuff out and were pretty much set on a $499 street price for the 500.  Curious how much more an HD500 with all the output opitions of the X3 would have cost if all the other conjectures are true.

I expect perhaps some more amps, maybe the EQ settings tweaks that everyone has requested (get rid of the percentages), but not much else. I know that two of the most requested features are global EQ and user IRs. Here's why I don't think you'll see either of those in this generation of PODs:

1. Global EQ. The fact is that an EQ of any sort will require DSP. Ultimately it doesn't matter if you have it set to a single effects slot, or have it in a global setting; it will still require that DSP. There problem here is that it could totally mess up patches that have already been created. You wouldn't even be able to load any patches that were already close to the DSP limit. And with it now in a global setting, it's taking away that DSP power all the time. This is less than ideal...even if the feature would make things so much easier. What could be a good middle ground is a feature that allows us to copy settings from an effect (e.g. studio EQ) and then paste them onto that effect in another patch.

2. User IRs. These too would likely require extra DSP. It would be my guess that the IRs for the PODs are somewhat small. Assuming this (although I absolutely could be wrong), then user IRs would not only require significantly more space, but possibly also significantly more DSP. I suppose the DSP wouldn't be as big an issue in this case, since you would have the choice of adding the IRs like any other effect (as opposed to it being on all the time). The problem is that there's probably little incentive for Line6 to add this feature. Not only would they have to rewrite the software to handle this, but they'd have to design some kind of computer program for you to transfer your IRs. They could add it to the HD Edit software, but it would still require a fair bit of re-programming that likely wouldn't lead to any significant increase in sales. Those who dislike the POD are unlikely to be pursuaded by this one feature, and those who like the POD are likely to buy it with or without this feature. And the truth is that the majority of users probably don't even know what an IR is, or even where to get them.

That's just my 2 cents. I'll be pleasantly surprised if I'm wrong. I would definitely love to see user IRs.

mralmostpopular - one little counter to your point 1:

There already is a Global EQ, but it is hidden and embedded into the Combo and Stack Front modes: the request for a Global EQ doesn't need to use more DSP than what those output modes already do, it just needs to be moved up so that it can be used for all output modes, and perhaps is made easier to adjust - for example when in the global settings mode the Amp controls would adjust the Global EQ not the selected Amp.

You're right. There is one there. I was thinking more in terms of something more powerful, which is what I've seen requested. Also remember that in combo/stack mode, it's not processing the cab sim, so it very well may be trading that DSP power.

i just heard through the grapevine the reason there hasn't been an update and there won't be one is, in the near future, after they exhaust all of the parts inventory, they will announce a new modeler and it won't be called POD. THIS IS FACT.

Hmmmm, interesting... and exciting if true...
