POD HD400 Amp Model Off problem

Hi folks~

Recently I bought a effect pedal to simulate the VOX AC30 sound, and I got it in my fx loop into the signal chain. To try a different tone, I turned the amp model off and used the external effect pedal in the fx loop for amp modelling. But when I settled all the presets and pressed "save" on the HD400, the tone turned different.

I also found that the tone switches back to the previous one that I had settled when I turn the amp model on and then off again, or press the "fx only" bottom. Then same problem occurs when I connect the HD400 with my laptop with USB, and click "send preset" in the HD400 edit software.

Here is a sample of these two different tones. I attached it to this thread. The former part is the ideal tone. The latter part is the somehow changed problem tone.

In case problem occurs with the attachment, here's a link for it:

I don't know where this problem is from, but I do hope it is solvable. Otherwise I might have to get new gears...

thanks buddy~~

I don't think this problem is something that has never been found and asked before, if this is a "global" problem that happens on every POD HD400.

Been looking for answers for days and nothing seemed to have much relationship with the problem I mentioned... tears...

Hi. On my HD500x there are tone-changes when connected to USB too. It seems, that changes are not applied sometimes to the output although the POD received the preset. It should help to receive the preset from the POD to let you hear your changes.

thanks pal~ I noticed it as well. So for security sometimes I adjust presets on the pedal itself instead of through the edit software.

But what bothers me is that the tone changes when I press the "save" bottom on the pedal, even if there is no connection between the pedal and my laptop...

thanks...

Let's try some troubleshooting to see if we can isolate the problem....

Leave your Hd400 disconnected from your computer for this.......

1. Does the Save function also misbehave with the same HD400 preset (leave the amp model off) if you turn the fx loop off? What about if you disconnect the cords from the fx loop? Don't worry about what the tone sounds like - we just want to investigate the behaviour.

2. Does the same thing happen if you use a different HD400 preset? Try using a completely empty preset (one of the factory New Tones).

Here is a relevant snip from the HD400 Advanced Guide. It's from the FX ONLY section:

"The FX Only mode is a persistent, “global†setting, therefore, the Amp, Cab & Mic processing remains bypassed when the mode is active, regardless of the Amp Model’s enabled/disabled state saved within any Preset."

So if the HD400 happens to be in FX Only mode at the time of saving, that state is not saved with the preset. You also need to make sure the amp block is OFF in your preset when you save it.

nice analysis!

here's the result.

The tone changes when I press the save bottom when I turn the amp model off. I was using a factory preset tone that I never touched. No external pedal is connected to the POD HD. FX loop is turned off. No connection between the POD HD and any computer.

The "fx only" bottom was disabled and not touched during the entire process. The "output mode" switch on the back of the device is set to "studio" position. I was using a headphone for out put through the "phones" output.

It seems that the problem is only about the amp model itself. I'll try to contact some guys in my neighborhood who also have a POD HD400, and do the same behavior to see if the problem occurs only on my device or on his as well.

thanks buddy!

So if the HD400 happens to be in FX Only mode at the time of saving, that state is not saved with the preset. You also need to make sure the amp block is OFF in your preset when you save it.

One more thing with this problem is that, for a tone where the amp model is disabled, when switched to this tone from other ones, it turns out different as well.

What I am guessing is that, when the amp model is turned off by the foot switch or through the edit software, there is something left from the amp model in the signal path, or in other words, the amp model is not completely disabled or turned off. It still affects the tone somehow, even when it is "turned off".

I guess that the amp model gets completely turned off when the "fx only" bottom is pressed. That's probably why the the tone doesn't change when the "fx only" bottom is pressed.

Line 6 staffs might get unhappy when they see customers choose not to use the amp model that they have devoted so much effort into... probably this is some kind of message from them saying "get back to our amp models!" haha...

Don't forget that any changes you make to a preset (like disabling an amp model) are only temporary unless SAVEd before changing presets. In other words if you are in a preset that was saved with the amp model ON and you disable the amp model, then switch to another preset, then return to the original preset.... that preset will be recalled in its last-saved state (the amp model is ON) rather than the state in which you left it. This is normal behaviour.

Also, I think the FX ONLY mode turns off the mic and cab selections as well, whereas simply disabling the amp model leaves the mic/cab selections active. Consult the manual for details about this.
