Songs Recorded With The Dream Rig

Recommended Posts

Take a gander at these 4 tunes...

http://www.bandmix.com/tboneous/

All guitar work is mic'd through the DT50 using a JTV 69 and a Pod HD 500

All songs written and performed by yours truly on my Mac. I am learning how to use Logic Pro 9 and believe you me, there is a lot to learn!

Baby Mama=

* The chicken scratch guitar is the f hole Tele body with lip stick pickups through the Blackface pre on the hd

* The guitar that doubles the horn is one of the hollow body guitars (sorry cant remember which one) with a single neck P-90 through a Gibtone

* The Chunky guitar in the middle is a Gibson Lp  with a classic pickup in the bridge through a Gibtone with a tube driver

Cadillac=

This one was fun! Lot of stuff going on so I'll stick to the highlights.

* Intro is the Baritone Guitar through the Gibtone and tube screamer

* All of the spacey guitar sounds are a sitar reverbed to the max through the vocoder

* Clean rhythms are the JTV 69 mag pickups through the Blackface Pre. Though I think I went direct on this one (No DT)

* I'll have to get back to you on the lead 'cause I can't remember

* There are a lot of samples and crap going on, Its hard to remember what is what.

Rooter Tooter =

* Clean rhythms are the stock semi that came with the JTV 69

* Lead is the Gibtone and tube driver using the JTV Neck pickup

* The outro bass and guitar doubling is the JTV Bridge pickup through the Dr Z and  The Park

* The picking at the end is through the Rickenbacher model using the blackface dbl.

My Wife =

* The clean is Rickenbacher model with lipstick pickups through a blackface dbl.

* The lead is the JTV 69 Neck and middle (not at the same time)

* I used the exp pedal to control the delay volume toward  the end of the solo. see if you can hear it!

I'm sure I left out a lot so if you have questions, Fire Away!

Grab yourself some good headphones, Crank it up!

Tbone

Love the music and the guitar work. Excellent tones with your Dream Rig tools! The Gibtone amp is my choice for a very nasty amp sound quite frequently. I was surprised at how nice the Tele with the lipstick PUs sounded. By the way, we are all in your debt for getting the ball rolling on this forum..

Keep up the Good work...Cheers!

Thanx!

The Gibtone is my go to amp pretty much for everything. Unless I'm looking for something more chimey, the Gibtone is it!

I can't wait for our forum to really take flight with more contributions and discussion!

Take Care

we want the funk... give up the funk...awwww...

i think i heard an opportunity to go from a funky beat to a smooth walk for the chorus in one of those tunes. i think it's already there but i'd like it to be more emphasized, more defined. how do you like that, tbone steak

oh yeah, good stuff

Nothin? No " your stuff sucks TBone!" No "that was good, but check out these tones"...no thoughts, no questions, no answers, no contributions?....nothin!?!? Come on Dreamers, where ya at?

I listened to your tunes today. Although this is not my music style I go for: very good recording, tasty and decent guitar playing and good tones - impressed my friend!

Unfortunately my DT50 stays in the bands rehearsal room. So I mainly do recordings with the HD500 direct into an audio interface at home.

Any experience with recording through the Direct Out of the DT50 too?

I'm more of a Ribeye guy to tell you the truth! But when you are black, play guitar and have a first name that starts with the letter "T", TBone is your default nickname! It's the law!

Thanx Tone!

Thanx Wolbai! Are you asking if I've tried to record direct out of the DT50 too in addition to mic'ing the cab? Or are you asking instead of mic'ing the cab? Either way the answer is no. Not yet. When I record guitar, I like to face the amp and stand as close to it as possible. It can be challenging but the interaction of the speakers and the pickups is awesome. I'm not sure I'd get that same sonic quality if I went direct. I use 4 mic's for my guitar work. 2 in the front, one on the back and one in the room. Maybe I'll try the direct out next time as well. The more the merrier!

I'd love to hear what yous guys are doing with your rigs! Please share!

Tboneous,

I mean using the Direct Out Link of the DT50 instead of mic'ing the cab for recording.

It seems to me that my type of recording is pretty much more basic compared to yours: I never ever had mic'ed my amp with FOUR mics. But the tones you have recorded speaks for itself ... I consider your type of recording as a professional level.

As I am pretty much more basic I record - if at all - with the DT50 only  via the Direct Out Link. And this happens mainly in the Bands rehearsal room. We ocassionally do a ONE Take of songs at rehearsal and I later mix it up in Cubase. But the environment is pretty basic. For example we record the Drums only with one mic :D  and with a lot of unwanted instruments in nearly all the mics (exception is my amp ---> Direct Out) ...

We did the following recording, I think, 1 year ago. I have cut it together to the Leadparts I am playing. As I am a "preset fetishist" :D , I am using 4 presets in this song. I use 2 amps: the Marshal Plexi for the Rhythm-parts and the Mesa Boogie for the Leadparts. I played it with my JTV69 with a Warmoth neck. The Outro part consists of that inspiring Octo-Verb I sometimes can go grazy for. I also use the Harmonizer in one part. You can hear that the sound with Harmonizer is somehow scratchy. This is because of the power attenuator I have used while recording. (I have recently given up using a power attenuator - but that is another story).

All in all: the Direct Out Link of the DT50 is not too bad I would say. I use the Direct Out and sometimes the Radial JDX Reactor (DI-Box with a 4x12 cab emulation) for gigging. Not really Funky - it is more the Retro-road:

Nice Wolbai!

I also like the Park tone you have on "Jumpin Jack Flash" Sounds like you have the guitar pan hard left or right (I never seem to put headphones on the proper ear) that tone is very nice and should be brought center and the keys should be brought down a touch in the mix. just a thought!

Yep. The Lead parts should brought down in the mix - but that is a hard thing to do for me

The Lead parts are centered in the recording. Not very experienced with recording, but for Lead parts I mainly center them, otherwise the keys tend to come undefined and less articulated (searching for words - English is not my first language) to me. Occasionally I double the sound track of Lead parts also. Guitar Rhythm tracks are sometimes good to pan them somewhere in the stereo panorama.

Looking forward to listen to some recordings and ideas how to use the DR from other DR-user here !

Just finished this - my first track since getting my dream rig. captured via variax jtv 69>VDI>HD500>L6>DT25>DI>MPA tube preamp>Mac. this took care of every thing except the drums and vocals, and I doubled the bass part with a synth. So, 70% dream rig. I actually find that mic-ing the dt25 sounds a bit "smoother" than the DI, but I got a wife and two kids with a bedtime and the dt25 is loud as f**k

Hi jegler,

I like that song: it has its own character ! Very nice rhythm together with the guitar(s), drums, bass. The vocals fits perfect to the instruments and vice versa. Some guitar phrases reminds on a song I can't remember.

Unfortunately there is some disturbing noise between 3.-20 sec very hearable. I have had something similar when I recorded years ago with a cheap PC with a cheap audio interface (in my case it was the power supply of the PC which generates that type of noise).

And yes, the DI-recording example above is from Little River Band. I haven't made that much testing to record the DT50 with a mic vs. the Direct out. But I would assume my ears would tell me the same like yours.

But as I am mainly targeting with my DR for Live-Music at smaller musical events,  I try to keep my necessary equipment as minimal as possible. Apart of that the smart thing with the Direct Out for Live-Performance is that you do not get this noise from other instruments.

Just for those who might have overseen it:

I have recently posted a recording with my JTV69 / 89F, POD HD500 in the "James Tyler Variax Forum"  to demonstrate the JTV FW 2.0 quality on Acoustic sounds and the Gibson Les Paul guitar model:

Ha! My wife said the same thing about the "disturbing noises". They're intentional - its some exhalation noise and various percussion being run through some serious distortion. I wanted to make it "grungy" but maybe it just sounds f*cked up . She said it was "distracting" so maybe I should re-think it's inclusion...

Anyway thanks for the props and Rock at All Costs.

If this is done by intension, I should have a look in the basement to dig out this old PC and send it to you to extend your recording equipment ;) wolbai.

Thanks.  I had't figured out how to go direct in with the HD when I did this.  I had it hooked up initially but there was a weird noise everytime I'd play a note.   I finally learned that I had to load a driver onto my Mac before the Quicktime would recognize the HD as an audio source (very strange for a Mac that usually gets by without knowingly adding extra drivers).  I'll get something up with better audio now that I know how. I'm thinking I'll try the direct out from the HD and then compare the out of the L2T.  I'm guessing that if I don't have any modeling activated in the L2T, they should be pretty similar..right?

Hi DR-folks,

I have installed new pickups on my JTV69, because I will play more with the magnetic pickups in the future as I have done in the past:

- Neck/Middle: Kinman AVn69

- Bridge: Seymour Duncan JB-TB4

I recorded therefore an improvisation on a nice playback "Emotive Ballad" (Jamtrackscentral.com) I stumbled over:

Thoughts / Feedback welcome.

cheers - wolbai.

Dude, that is gorgeous! You should upload patches of those tones - esp. the clean intro guitar. very nice.

PS

I'm assuming you're a dude, but then, I call everybody "dude"
