HD500X Amp Model Tones/EQ(first plug in with the Band.)

Plugged in the 500X for the first time last night with the Band & the Combo Amp i'm using TEMPORARY(Orange Rocker 30C)

My initial impression is that the Amp Models I selected to start with SLO 100(Clean,Crunch,Lead)where very,Bright,Thin,No Body),i hate trying to describe tones,so that will have to do,

.

There was no depth or body, even with the Bass/Mid full up,Treble Presence backed all the way off(knobs on the 500X),i tried every mode of output available, from the Menu,i also tried Pre only models & Full Amp models, all had a bit of an affect on the sound, but the predominant tone as described above, remained the same.

I am a bit lost with all the various EQ sections(e.g. Amp Combo Front,Global etc).

Can anyone give me a guidance how to get set-up with Just One of the SLO amp models,to get some guts/depth into it.

This EQ/Tone is completely different from my other attempt at using a Floorboard modeler, which always seemed like it had a blanket over the Speaker.

The clarity/definition is there, but surely i should be able to get a Bassey middley sound by just turning the Tone knobs ?,i'm sure it can be done & my lack of expertise is the problem,i just need a place to start,i find all the extra EQ options bewidering.

On the plus side i got a really good pedal sound with the Amp Models switched off,the Orange reacted great to the Overdrive etc.

Can anyone help a pensioner out?  :D

Can you bypass the preamp section of your ORANGE and connect the POD output to the power amp section? You will need a Line In or an FX Return jack on the amp. In this case I would use a preamp model in the HD500X preset with no mic/cab selection. Also experiment with the output mode setting. Try Power Stack?

For more options you could explore the 4CM (four cable method) setup for using your POD with a physical amp.

The Rocker, has no effects loop or power in,it's a very basic Amp,with Natural & Dirty Channels.

The Natural Ch. has no tone Controls,it's basically just a Volume pot in front of the Power section,so as Combos go,i think it should make a fair stab at the 500X amp models.

In terms of putting the 500 into the PA,I play in 2 Bands,no PA  facility with this Band,it's all about basic Rhythm & Blues with as much energy as us old guys can muster.

But with the other Band(which is my Main Band)we have a decent Yamaha DSR system,& that will be my main focus for the 500X.

I only gave it a go last night just to see :) & i could easily just use it for the overdrives etc, with that Band the overdrives, worked great into the Rocker natural CH.

Having said this,i'm still surprised at the sound/tone of the Modeling Amp,into the Rocker,it's a very thick sounding amp,i'm really quite surprised by the tone through it,but plenty of time to get used to it.

So know basic ideas where to start with the eq's?

What does your patch look like? You could try to put a studio EQ somewhere near the end of your chain and increase the gain. Have you tried to increase the mixer volumes? How about a boost comp before the amp model? Just throwing some thoughts out there.

I have two banks of patches set up. One to connect to a pa with full amp models and one to connect to the DT with pre amps. As others have said, going straight into a 'real' amp will generally end up with a coloured tone but if you try setting the Orange clean then play with the pod you should get some useable sounds.

The thing I forget is to switch the pod outpu from 'studio direct' for pa to 'combo' when using the amp. To access this hold down 'view'and press right on the circle button a few times. Indeed you can experiment changing the output (it has a stack setting too) and just use the one that sounds best!

Have fun!

As said by Alex above here, plugging the POD to the front end of a guitar amp is not one of the best solutions if you are going to use the amp models, however if that is the only option available at least the guitar amp should have the mids at ten and bass and treble very low close to zero..

+1...I've tried plugging straight into the front of a variety of amps with the 500X (and other modelers over the years). It's a dead end, simple as that. Daisy chaining a modeler and a preamp together is an ugly mess. Time to go amp shopping...

Thanks, for replying. In my response to the comments about plugging into the "pre-amp" of the Orange,i did say that it is probably the closest input you could find to plugging into the Power Amp section, there is only a Volume Knob, with no tone Controls, there will be an amount of pre-amp,but it is minimal, think of an original AC30,but without the single tone knob,i'm not sure how different it would be plugged directly to the power-amp,because then you would probably still need a Master Pot.

Having said this i have watched some Videos by Peter Hanmer, where he plugs into the front(Guitar)input in a Combo & he gets a really good "thick" sound, like the Orange without the 500X,i know it's Vid & not live, but the sound is there.

My point is it must be possible to get what i'm looking for from the 500X into the Orange,i just don't know how to go about it & i'm looking for a starting point,as i said in my original post,i'm a bit bewidered with all the possible EQ'ing solutions & i just need pointing in the direction :)

Cheers.

Because the PODHD is built to be used in a lot of different ways, such as Direct to a P.A., FRFR Speakers, 4cm Method into a Guitar Amp, Direct Into a Guitar Power Amp, or into the Pre-Amp of a guitar amp.  Then you have combo open back amps and stacks that are enclosed.  Not to mention every sound system isn't exactly alike to begin with.

Anyway, you can do it.  But it'll take more than clicking a few buttons.

My suggestion is to start with Studio Direct into the Pre-Amp.  Then place a Mid Focus EQ in the FX chain.  Dial in what you want as far as Amp model and FX then adjust with the Mid Focus EQ until it sounds good.  It may take a while but it's there.

A piece of advice; if you're plugging into a power amp and it doesn't have a master pot, the Master Volume knob on the Pod becomes the control for the power amp. If plugging into a power amp with no volume control (like an FX return on an amp head) you should start with the master volume all the way down

Your amp's preamp is either in the signal chain, or it isn't. You can't use a "minimal" amount...it's either there (with the typical drive, bass, mids, treble tone-stack), or its not. If you're not plugging into an FX return, then you are running straight into the preamp, which will color everything the POD does. Is it impossible to run this way? No...but it tends to be a royal pain in the arse. At the outset, the 500X is hard enough to wrap your head around, without extra speed bumps. A decent FRFR powered speaker will make life a whole lot simpler...and better sounding. ;)

Yeah, get a Speaker system like the L2T or 3T to carry with you...

If money is an issue and no PA get a powered floor monitor like Roland makes for Electric Drums...

Even out the EQ and Volume on the Orange in the mean time....

Use the HD 500 volume and have it set to Diect Studio out...

Then instead of screwing up your patches, use th Global EQ in System settings to boost and cut your eq found to the front end of the amp....

Ideally, running through a PA is what you want...

So when you do gig out with a venue that has a PA plug into it...

When you switch bands and other output amps, that Global EQ is gonna be your best friend...

The problem is really not your Line 6....

Thanks,Joel Brown,i'll give this a go,if i'm using Studio Direct would you set line/amp switch to Line?.

Yep what he said.  Also you may want to adjust your amp's tone controls too.  I would start with them in the middle position.

Thanks,as i said in a previous post, the Rocker 30 is very unusual,in the fact that, there are no tone controls.on the Natural channel.only a Volume control.
