POD users: how do you pair JTV models with amp models?

Recommended Posts

I'm curious how POD users are pairing up guitar models with amp models.

I'll be using my HD500x and assume I'd use my normal favorite amps for the magnetic pickups and jtv models like Lester.  For acoustic possibly a clean Fender amp model or maybe no amp at all.  For Chime 12-string, maybe a vox amp model.

There are no rules, of course. But I use the same kind of pairings that you mention. I think that's mostly based on familiarity with vintage sounds. Want to sound like The Beatles, or other 60s Liverpool? Vox with R-Billy or Chime. Rolling Stones? Fender guitars and amps. Acoustic? No amp at all but Vintage Preamp is your friend. Classic Blues? Again, Fender all the way. Zeppelin or AC/DC type hard rock? Marshall and Gibson, particularly Les Paul. Smooth jazz? Jazz Rivet and jazz bank of guitars. Metal and real high gain stuff? Not my bag, but the pairings are there.

But no harm in mixing and matching!

I usually base sounds off of other bands if I'm playing their stuff, so if they're using certain gear, I will try to match it as close as I can with the guitar model and amp model.

Examples:

Telecaster -> Vox AC30 for high twang

Les Paul - > JCM 800 for smooth mid range high gain

Les Paul or JTV 89 -> Mesa Boogie for serious metal stuff

That's the beauty of the Variax, you can now nail a sound even closer than before, and if you want something original, it opens the palette of sound wider than before.
