Trying new stuff with my Dream Rig, but...

Recommended Posts

Every now and then, I pull my L2m out of my setup (I use it only for acoustic stuff) and experiment with using it for electric guitar work instead of my DT amp.

I know a lot of people here swear by this FRFR set up, and I would love to have a small grab-n-go setup. But to my ears it sounds horrendous! I can't even describe the sound other than complete crap awfulness!

For those who have success with this setup, can you give just a few tips on how to dial in a believable tone in the FRFR environment? I'd sure appreciate it!

My goto models with the DT are the DR Z, AC 15, Plexi and very recently the Blackface Vib. I have no use for any of the High Gain models.

I like Eric Johnson Clean tones, Bonamassa lead tones and Robben Ford Rhythm/lead tones

What is the nugget to get me started? Why does it sound like a ear piercing speaker in a shoe box for me , but sounds great online and for all those who swear by it?

Hi,

This is my 'receipe' (I'm using the HD500X with (two) L2T via L6 Link)

  • always use full amp models (never preamp only)
  • always use cab models (never 'no cab' -  and experiment with different cab models and with LOW CUT- and RES LEVEL-settings)
  • experiment with mic (ie. 409 Dynamic vs.121 ribbon .... etc.)
  • always Mid Focus EQ after the mixer (ie. after mic - and experiment with LP Freq and LP Q, see screenshot)
  • always set L2T to 'Reference/P.A."-Speaker-Mode!!!

Thanx! Interesting that Reference/P.A is the ticket for electric guitar and not electric guitar!

Hi TBoneous,

yes, in my case this is the 'ticket' for electric and acoustic guitars ... not because of the different pickup-systems (electric vs. acoustic guitars), but because of the HD500(X) in the signal-chain ...

I use the HD500X as (full) modelling-unit:

  • in case of an electric guitar a patch with a matching amp (Fender , Marshall , VOX ..)
  • in case of an acoustic guitar a patch with (for example) a Tube Compressor and an EQ

My goal is: the output-signal from the HD500X (L6 Link / XLR) is 'ready' for amplification without further toneshaping.

In other words: The 'only' purpose of the L2T - in my case - is the (FullRangeFlatResponse-)amplification of HD500X-Output

... others may have different experiences ...

Makes sense. So you are XLR out of the 500X to the P.A. And L6 to the L-speaker?

Yes, XLR to P.A. (or other non-Line6-Monitors) and L6 Link to both L2T-speakers.

Hint: Save the L2T-speaker mode (per patch):

  • Chose your patch (for example '3F') on HD500(X)
  • Chose (for example) 'KEYBOARDS'-speaker mode on L2T
  • Press SAVE (two times) on HD500(X).

Next time you change to patch '3F' on HD500(X), your L2T will change to 'KEYBOARDS'-speaker mode ...

Cool. So far, as I play with this set up, I am no closer to hearing something pleasing coming from my L2. Maybe it will sound sonically better with the band.

I can get the L2 to save its settings alone but I have had no luck getting it to save its settings in conjunction with my DT amp. All I get from Line 6 is shrugged shoulders.

Maybe hitting save twice is the ticket!

The same way that running into two very different speaker cabinets will give you two different tones, patches that you've created with the DT are never going to sound the same through any FRFR speaker...only the difference here will be orders of magnitude more noticeable. They are vastly different animals, with very different frequency responses. It will be even worse if you're using pre-amp only models into the DT, and trying to use the same patches into the L2T. Practically speaking, it's one or the other, with patches tailored accordingly. Mic/cab choices make a huge difference. Experimentation is the only way to get there...trial and error. Heavy on the "error"...

Heavy on the error is right! I know how my gear works. I'm not using patches I use with my DT and wondering why they don't sound right.  I know to go to studio direct, I know to use full models, I know about cab/mic selections, I know about DEP, yada yada yada.

Still sounds like crap! So far....

I start new patches the same way I always do...Pull up an amp model (in this case, the full model) and try to make it sound like a real amp. Once I've got that dialed in, then I build the patch. So far, not so good!

I'll keep trying but I don't think I'll give up my DT just yet.
