winja52
Hi guys! The Spider Valve is the first tube amp I've ever owned, and I head the 100w head version. Lately, it's been making this crackling sound, even when not plugged in, and earlier, one power tube was completely glowing orange. Is it just time for new tubes? And also, how difficult is it to retube and rebias the amp yourself? One last thing: the input jack on the amp head is a tad bit loose, and I don't know if this could be causing it, but I think it's just the tubes. Any suggestions? Thanks! Stormtrooper12
Yeah It sounds like a major tube problem for sure. Unless you are fully aware of how to adjust the bias and the potential shock hazards I'd leave it to a pro. Unless you really want to study up and learn how to do it properly and safely yourself. Not trying to be a nervous nelly just being a realist. That's one thing I like about fixed bias amps(ie:Mesa), no muss no fuss.
cgtrox
Make no mistake bro, poking around inside a tube amp without any knowledge of it CAN KILL YOU!!!! :o So, please be careful or just better yet, let a pro do it for you. cgtrox B)
Line6Drew
Hello! Winja52, I highly recommend taking the amp to a service center. +1 cgtrox and SSstormtrooper with not fiddling with it, as it is very dangerous. Here is the link to our service center finder: http://line6.com/service_centers/ have an authorized technician swap the tubes for you.
