Record without cabinet

Recommended Posts

I have a few tube amp heads including a line 6.Some of them come with line out of recording & some like the Egnator 15 w only has a speaker out & effects send/return.What is the best way to record this sound via sn interface without using a cabinet or mining the cab? Do I need to plug the speaker out into a DI box? Will the behringer DI ultra do the job?  http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/DI100/?adpos=1t1&creative=110418914761&device=c&matchtype=b&network=g&gclid=CPqV2IOmms0CFdgWgQodiOkC7w

I have a Spider valve amp that is too loud.can I just disconnect the speakers & feed it through the DI & record safely?

Amps like the Line 6 that have a Line Out/Headphone jack that automatically disengages the speakers can be used as a DI direct to your audio interface input(s) because the amp output section is effectively disengaged when you do this.   You do not want to run any amp not wired this way without a connected output.  A DI box is not what you want if you want to run the speaker output of an amp to your interface input - you need a power attenuator/load box like this one:  http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/RockCrusher

Thanks for the reply.Line 6 does a great job with direct line outputs for recording.I have the Spider valve & thats exactly what it does, although there is still no way to bypass the sound coming out of the speakers which is way too loud. The Behringer DI does claim to  eliminate the speaker though. Not sure how far authentic though. Here is what the link says on the Behringer DI posted above :

  • Allows direct connection to speaker outputs with up to 3,000W
