Maple JTV 69 neck - want to sell it, how to remove serial #?

Recommended Posts

Howdy all -

Definitely now a fan of the Variax.

I recently bought a 2nd JTV69s on eBay; my first one was black with the maple neck, and the 2nd one has a graphite neck. The graphite neck'd version came with the original maple neck.

Looking to sell the (now extra) maple neck but would appreciate any insight into how to remove the serial number without damaging the neck itself - I registered the guitar and do not want any complications should someone who wants to get the snappy maple sound inadvertently try to register the serial number on the neck. The original owner never registered the guitar so it wasn't a problem for me to accomplish.

Any ideas?

Right now, if I list the neck on eBay or Reverb, I'm going to have to cover it up as in the (MacGuyver'd) photo below, but would rather show the neck with the serial number removed than leave someone dissatisfied with my removal technique if it isn't pictured on the auction.

Alt: is it possible to "save" the serial number from being re-registered without my consent here on Line6.com?

Here's the neck in question, with my current (sub-optimal) solution.

I believe that's the default behaviour. A serial number that is already registered cannot be re-registered.

I have often advised people who are having trouble registering an already-registered device to contact Line 6 Support. I don't know what Line 6 Support does in those cases in terms of contacting the current registrant and confirming ownership. I suggest you call Line 6 for a definitive answer before removing the serial number. If I were looking to buy your guitar the lack of serial number would dissuade me. I would assume it is stolen and I would not buy it.

Used to sell guitars - in this case, it's more like a player's special. I'm less concerned about the serial number, as the neck and pickup upgrades are about equal to the MSRP of the guitar and explain the lack of serial number; I'd also de-register if I sold it and give the information over. But I don't see selling it for awhile.

Thanks though -

What do you plan on selling it for?

$85 with free US shipping/insurance/tracking included. Upcharge for my actual expense if international. UPS to verified PayPal address only.

There's a guy on Reverb selling his JTV 6 string rosewood fretboard/maple neck with the locking tuners for $179 - though in fairness he has locking tuners included, if a little generously valued in his final price. You can easily get Hipshots for $40 with a coupon.

There's also a guy on eBay selling a Line 6 Variax 5 string bass rosewood fretboard/maple neck with no hardware for $249, which is just beyond ridiculous.
