Helix pedal randomly freezing

I have the most current firmware and software for the Helix pedal.  I have noticed that the pedal will randomly freeze up and will not allow me to change patches, use any of the buttons/switches/pedals.  I can continue playing, but the only way to get control back is to power off the Helix.  Yes, I followed the directions on the Line6 site regarding the proper way to do the firmware upgrade... :)  I also reset the pedal to the factory settings and re-done the most current firmware update, same issue.

Your help is appreciated...scott

Is this happening with Helix connected to a computer?

I've had Helix freeze a few times when connected to the computer USB with my DAW open and the Helix editor. I now set the DAW MIDI to nine when I am working in the Helix editor.

Alas, mine is doing the same and I am not connected to any computer.  In addition, most of the time the LCD display goes black when this happens.  I have a ticket with support.

  • 4 weeks later...

Line 6 did repair the Helix in about 7 days.  10 day turn-around.  The screen is fine but I still have lockup on two patches so far.  I have the ticvket open and have just sent off my patch to them to check to see if it is now a software bug as well.

More to come

Wow, I bought a used one from Sam Ash a few days ago, and have noticed a few weird things already. Considering I have no warranty, I think I'm going to return it. Also, I got off to a bad start when I tried to use the "updater". It asked me to login (I think L6 is the only company that makes you login in order to use their updater, fwiw). Then, it constantly gave me an "invalid login" message. I checked my account, and it was NOT "invalid"! I was able to install the update offline, but still, that was really an annoying waste of time, and reminded me of the frustration I've had with other L6 products. I was hoping they'd improved a lot since the Yamaha (I've always had good experiences with Yamaha gear) acquisition, but so far that doesn't seem to be the case.

You actually don't have to login to use the Updater... You can run it in offline mode. You just have to download the flash file manually this way. If you're having login issues with the Updater, that could a matter of a firewall or anti-virus setting on your system, though.

Yes, I figured out that you don't have to login. But logging in is the first thing you're asked to do when you run the updater.

And I did a google search of "invalid login" issues, and several other users had the same frustrating experience. I can honestly say I've never had a similar issue with other companies (and I HAVE had issues with other companies, just not ones that made me feel like smacking their products the first day I tried to use them).

My 2 day old Helix did this yesterday.  I had used it from about 10:00 am til around 2:30, stopped to have some lunch and spent about an hour to two hours away from it and when I went back into my studio, it was "frozen"...I could still play the patch it was on but when either changing the patches via the footswitches or thru the Helix Editor, it would change to the selected patch but the sound coming out of it was always that last patch I used before taking the break.

A power cycle took care of it, but it is a little bit disheartening for that to happen to my brand new (fully updated fwiw) Helix.  I leave it connected to my Mac via USB btw.

@spankygtr, the warranty on Helix is transferable, IF you have the ORIGINAL purchase receipt from when it was bought new, which is actually pretty cool. If SA can't provide you with that, then personality I would return it, even if you get this particular issue sorted, maybe unless it was seriously impressively cheap, which I haven't seen happening. Even used, Helix is too expensive to run that kind of a risk when there are alternatives, you just might have to wait for them to show up.

Are you saying you only experienced freezing while connected to your Mac? Have you had any while not connected?

I've ONLY ever had my Helix connected to the Mac - I'm still in the process of setting up my sounds so I leave it connected and do my editing through the Helix Editor.

  • 6 months later...

I've had mine for about a year and a 1/2 now and just had a freeze on me yesterday with the 2.12 update.  I was plugged into my computer at the time.  Playing live though, I haven't had any freezes for about 6 months, thank god.   For a while I was getting them about every 3rd show.   Real buzz kill waiting for the power recycle to finish onstage.
