Pod hd 500 spdif to the internal soundcard of the pc.

Hi, im thinking to buy a internal soundcard for my pc that will have spdif output so I can record with the POD HD 500 by the spdif. The connetcion will be spdif from the pod, to spdif output of the internal soundcard.

 

My questions are:

It's that possible? the quality will be good?, also the studio monitors will be connected to the sound card by rca connections, so the sound from the pod will come through the monitors right?

I use the SPDIF out of my HD500X to my Presonus FP10 interface and it works like a charm.

 

That being said... the HD500 is also a USB audio interface (I just don't use it in that way). So you could use the HD500 as your interface to your PC and not have to buy anything extra. You would plug your speakers into the L/R audio outs on the HD500 (either XLR or 1/4" outs - depending on your speakers).

Do you notice any latency when using SPDIF to the interface? (having to adjust buffer size/samples)

You need a s/pdif input on your interface. An output won't do it.

You can select in the output menu of the HD  to use the s/pdif out dry for additonal in your computer processing or wet 

with the HD processing added. Level can also be set.

I use this output as it saves a conversion of the digital to analogue as I have an excellent interface.

The onboard usb as an interface can do similar without the dry choice.

@gearhead. I have a pod ux2 and an RME fireface 800. One of my favourite producers said that for recording guitar DI's, he uses his RMEFF800 interface and syncs up the POD interface S/PDIF to the RME FF800. I would like to know what the benefit of doing this would be and what cable I would need to sync the two up (the pod UX2 only has S/PDIF outs but RMEFF has in and out).

I would say the main benefit for using S/PDIF is it maintains it's digital format. It doesn't have to be converted to analog as it does for the outputs of the HD500 and doesn't have to be then converted back to digital to get into the computer. You drop two processes.

The guitar DI means direct to your RME via a DI box which takes the unbalance guitar level and converts it to a balance mic level.

But you may of meant direct from the HD ( a most glorified DI) via s/pdif into your RME.

UX2 I presume is your Line 6 interface which also has a s/pdif out possiblly for vocals or just additional inputs.

The answer would be yes , if the RME has two digital inputs. It remains in the digital domain and only converted to analogue once at the monitoring or playback from the PC.

But if only one input into the RME then you have Mics into the RME and HD on the s/pdif input as won't be able to sinc both HD and UX2 in s/pdif.

No noticeable latency from the HD via s/pdif running at 24bit /88khz at about 128samples. 

As I run Addictive drums getting down to 64 samples can start to get glitchy. My PC is quite old and not very much memory.

 

A modern PC with plenty of RAM would easily beat that on a 64bit O/S.

 

But depends on how many Softsynths you have running.

 

If the drums are a pre recorded multitrack with some pre mixing on them to a bus then can get to 64 samples but on my old PC

it isn't that stable.

The fact is not even at 256 samples is there latency to worry about. The s/pdif is quick.

Would not go above that though for tracking.
