Jtv 89 Hd Update And Palm Mute?

Recommended Posts

Does the HD update solve the palm mute issue on this JTV?

Solve? No. Improve? Yes. Palm muting on the JTV with current firmware is an improvement compared to the original Variax but it is not yet  perfect and probably never will be. You will still notice a difference in sound between palm muting with the magnetic pickups and palm muting with the models, comparing the JTV 89 model to the magnetic pickups I notice the modeled sound is softer/duller/less aggressive and still missing the full pick attack/bite.

Try one out before buying if possible to see if it is right for you, some people are more anal about these things than others and some are fine with the JTV palm muting and able to get it to do what they need it to.

I had a JTV 89 and play heavy metal and constantly palm mute with high gain.  I have experienced no problems, though I have no experience with the old version.

Thanks so much for replying.  It helped me a lot.

Oh I see.  Interesting, very nicely put.

I'm selling my, played twice all updated blood red jtv.  Let me know if you're interested.

Wow! How much are you selling it for?

@ALL: Thanks so much for replying you guys, you're a BIG help!

It's honestly up to you. It will be a little different than a magnetic palm mute, yes. The 1.9 update has added programming to help make palm mutes sound more natural though.

You have to listen to it yourself and decide if you like it or not.

Personally, there's times where it does bother me, and times when I think it sounds great. It sounds great when it's being down tuned below e standard. I made an SG model that makes palm mutes not sound so chunky and have more bite compared to the LP models.

I'm using a Variax 600 though, which is before the 1.9 update.

Does anyone know if there's any improvement between 1.9 and the HD update though? You know, if they furthered improvement on palm muting. Obviously it was improved on from 1.8 to 1.9, but I mean 1.9 to 2.0.

Anyways, like I said, listen to examples, possibly try one out yourself and decide if you like the palm muting or not.

Here's a demo I did with my Variax 600 on a Les Paul setting, alt turned to C standard.. It's going into Guitar Rig 5 with a tube screamer and 5150 green channel with crunch on. Pre gain at about 6, post on 7. I've found palm muting higher up the strings helps lessen the chunky compressed sound.

It's because when you palm mute on a Variax, the piezos are sitting behind the palm, giving it a different sound than a magnetic guitar, because when you palm mute on a magnetic guitar, it is picking up the sound in front of your palm than behind like on a Variax.

The result is a bit of a chunky compressed palm mute sound. I think the palm mute code in the Variax helps smooth out your palm mutes, maybe give it better decay/release to give it a more natural sound. Pretty nice approach, and I applaud Line 6.

The palm muting actually doesn't bother me much in the current state. I really think it depends on what style you're playing. For the metal guys who want the really tight tones, I can see why it would be noticeable.

maybe next generation variaxes will have a special magnetic pickup to give the source signal for electric guitars modeling purpose with a very broad frequency spectrum response from which to subtract (and add if necessary) specific frequencies depending on the models, thus maintaining the typical magnetic pickup attack/transient..

and the usual piezo pickups just for the acoustic models..

but the perfect separation and processing of each string with a single magnetic PU could be problematic.. hhmmm?

six mini magnetic special pickups, maybe, one for each string??

I'm just fantasizing ;)

You realize the point of the piezo pickups is to allow high accuracy modeling and for you to tune each string individually?

A magnetic pickup cuts out the highs and lows and only captures mid-frequencies. This would make modeling impossible, or very inaccurate since you basically deleted the frequencies it needs to model guitars right.

The point of the piezos is that it's the closest thing you can get to the pure tonality of your strings.

I saw some video of someone talking about piezos and how they have an extremely flat and broad frequency response compared to magnetics. It's perfect for modeling.

I believe the Fender modeling guitars and all Roland modeling systems use magnetic pickups. I would love to get my hands on a Roland hex pickup and hook it up to one of my Variaxes to see if it improved palm muting - I would think it would have a detrimental effect on the modeling accuracy but maybe not, the RackVax system uses the Roland pickup and I have read no reports of compromised modeling.
