Can't Flash To 2.0

Recommended Posts

I have an 89 with 1.9 loaded. When I plug into the workbench widget and plug into the computer both green lights are on. Everything worked when I uploaded 1.9 but now Monkey only sees the USB device and not the guitar. All software shows up to date, but no option to flash to 2.0. I downloaded the flash but when I open it, no option to flash. I think it sees the interface but not the guitar. I've tried unplugging the 1/4 inch cable, the USB, different ports. I just didn't have this trouble before. Any advice?

I only know what worked for me. Hook your guitar via the VDI cable to the USB interface, then interface to the computer. Then hook the 1/4" plug to your amp. Make sure your guitar is NOT in digital (piezo) mode. Make sure your volume knob is NOT set to off. Then confirm both lights on the USB interface are green. Now open Monkey. It should see your guitar. If it does, proceed to Part 2. If not, follow Part 1 below.

Part 1. Unhook the USB cable from your computer, plug it back in. (while Monkey is running) This may force it to see it. If not, unplug your VDI cable from the interface and replug. One of those should work. If not, quit Monkey and restart it. If none of this works, call Line 6.

Part 2.

If the Monkey sees your guitar, choose it. Then you will see that it shows the 2.0 firmware. You can download it there, hitting the "reinstall latest firmware", or if you have downloaded the latest firmware and have it on your desktop, in the Monkey window, you can click ONCE on the 2.0 firmware line to highlight it. You will then see new options in the righthand part of the window. One of which says "install from downloaded file". I think the other option is to Rollback to a previous version of the firmware.

Hope this helps. I've flashed my guitar a lot in the last few days, so this is from memory. Hope it's not more confusing than helpful. Good luck.

That's the way I did it the last time, but it just refuses to see the 89. If I unplug the guitar from the interface, the light goes red plug back in green, but no change in Monkey. Guess I'll get ahold of Line 6. The guitar works perfectly in 1.9, so it might be a problem with that USB box. Thanks for the help, I might try again tomorrow.

Did you try another RJ45 cable?

Any network cable should work.

I remember having some trouble with the dlivered cables.

Thanks for noting that any network cable will work. I was wondering about that. This is not an area of expertise for me. I have a bunch of ethernet cables around. I know there are regular and crossover. Do you know which one would work/not work? Thanks in advance.

Yes, You have to use a normal network CAT5 ethernet cable with RJ45 connector. Take care that all wires are connected. Generally that is the case. The variax digital  cable and the box connection cable are simple CAT5e ethernet cables - no mojo in it.

Don't use a crossover cable. That won't work.

Thanks! I think I am going to re-flash my guitar's firmware using one of my ethernet cables just to find out, or rule out, the VDI cable as the cause of a problem I am having.

they use a standard cat5 cable... but not a standard pinout....

Yes, they don't use the usual color code order. But that does not matter, as long as they use a one to one layout. And that is what they do.

A crossover as I mentioned before won't work with the interface, because it has no one to one order.

And while the interface delivers no power to the variax it wouldn't destroy it. I did it accidently and as expected: Nothing happened. But simply don't try it. Maybe I just had good luck.

BTW: I would also check the little golden pins in the female connector of the interface and the variax. Probably use some switch cleaner.

Just saying what i'd seen in the forums (the old ones) where some user or another messed up their stuff using a crossover...

i'm certainly not willing to test :D

If you use a crossover cable between an HD500 or XT pedal board and a variax, I can well believe that the outcome might not be good.  Both those units supply power at enough voltage and current to let the magic smoke out of logic circuitry.

I tried for 3 days with no luck. Since the guitar plays well with 1.9, I'm afraid to mess with it any longer. I don't want to render it unusable. I would like to try out the new models and workbench, but I'm stalled out right now. If you have any luck with it let me know please.

  • 2 weeks later...

I noticed there was an update on Monkey to 1.65, so I downloaded it and tried to flash to 2.0. I don't know if it was the new Monkey, but it worked this time.  The new modeling is great, and you can put me down as one who likes the new strat sounds!
