Hd500 Low Output/volume

Hello.

I own a HD500 for a few days now.

I think the models and everything are great, but I'm really having problems with the volume.

For example I want to use the AC30 model, but even when I max the Channel Volume ( CH VOL ) and the Drive I can't get enough volume to work with.

I even maxed the level to +12db in the mixer and still can't get a decent amount of volume ( the volume is there, but considering max. CH Vol, max. Drive, max. boost in the mixer, it's definitely not acceptable ).

I could of course use compression or distortion in front of the amp, but I can't see that as a solution, since I maxed everything and still not getting a good volume and comp. or dist. also affect the sound ( of course ).

I searched quite a bit and this guy here seems to have the same problem: http://line6.com/supportarchivenew/thread/63490

I have my HD500 connected via USB, which is also how I record.

I made pictures of the settings and also recorded my guitar ( one with just the AC30 model and the other one with added compression ).

I think the compressed one sounds fine, but I'm not satisfied with having to always use a compression for the cleaner amp models ( some models give a nice amount of volume, especially the more dirty ones ).

Also the output mode is set to studio/line, but also tried other options in the software and also on the HD500 itself ( the switches ).

Can you guys try my settings and upload your playing? What could be the problem?

My guitar pickups should give enough output ( EMG DG-20 active pickups with fully loaded battery ).

Kind regards,

John

I am not a fan of the AC30 model in HD...it's ok, but the PRE really isn't usable because it lines up with the 0% nfl topo in the DT amps...and that is a pretty hot power amp config...If you are running direct, try the FULL model like phil suggested....I would suggest dropping the AC30 altogether and using the Soldano Clean Model...one of the best clean models they have ever done IMHO. Very easy to balance with other models also...

Thank you for your answers. Can you give more information on how to use the "FULL" version of the amp and not just the PRE(amp?)? Since I also have the 2x12 Silver Bell Cabinet selected, I don't really get what you mean  :( .

Also I was listening to someone on youtube and I downloaded his preset and he was also recording with just his guitar plugged into the HD500 and recording via USB. I also needed to max out some things for decent volume.

Another question: With my setup, would you have as low volume as me? Isn't my setting usual? All the factory presets are also like that, aren't they?

Thank you very much guys! The full version of the amp does indeed have a better output/volume.

And yes, the master volume also increases the output and it let's me use the AC30 without any compression in front of it.

Thanks again :).

Oh and btw. I think the AC30 model sounds great!

I'm having the same issue.  Everyone over on the DT forums says the AC30 is supposed to be the default for topology III, but the volume is well below half of any of the other amp models.  Full or pre-amp.  It doesn't seem to matter.  If you're using a DT amp you should be using the pre-amps only.  I would think it would be a fairly easy fix for line6 to do on the next firmware update.  I'm not really sure though.  No one seems to have addressed this question so maybe it's more for them than just bumping up the volume max.

I really wish they could just upload the DT patches since they're supposed to be the same as the PODHD"s, but supposedly optimized for the DT's.  I'm guessing there's more to it than that since they're so tight lipped about it.

I have a somewhat different problem and its across the board.. not just one patch  I have HD500 l6 connection on my dt25. but to connect a second amp (blackstar) im using 1/4 output on the hd500 to the blackstar...and the volume level is a lot lower. I almost have to peg out the blackstar to balance the 2 out at moderate volumes.... Is there a way to increas the output of the 1/4 out to more closely match what I am getting from the L6 connection???

Make sure you have the 1/4" outs on the HD500 set to AMP if you are running into the INPUT on the Blackstar. If you are running into the FX loop on the Blackstar, make sure you have it set to LINE.

While this is an old thread, I thought I would post an alternative solution for newbies/used equipment market. Using a FiiO Taishan digital to analog audio converter (or similar) I was able to use the S/PDIF output. It is the equivalent of having the master cranked to max but offers a cleaner signal IMO. Going this route I was able to turn my power amp down significantly. Also, no longer need to boost signal in amp/effects path. The converter auto syncs at 96Khz. You can use a regular shielded RCA cable for S/PDIF connection. I used an old composite video cable and used the yellow video cable for S/PDIF and Red & White for audio. Two RCA to 1/4" adapters will be needed to connect to power amp and a USB power adapter for the converter power. This set-up can also be used to run into an audio interface that does not have an S/PDIF input or into a looper and maintain connection to your amp. No noise and wow, what clarity and volume!
