How to get the bass out of the mix on lead parts?

 Hi,

I play the bass in a progressive metal band and I've been trying to get my sound out of the mix for quite some time now, without success.

My rig is:

Ibanez BTB705dx

Line 6 pod HD500

Ampeg SVT-4 amp

Mesa Standard Powerhouse 2x15 cab

The kind of tone I'm trying to get is like Dream Theatre's "Home" intro or Tool's Justin Chancellor lead parts.

I'm also trying to get this kind of synth bass sound Colin Edwin has at the beginning of Porcupine Tree's "The start of something beautiful".

Can someone help me find these tones? I've been looking everywhere for answers and doing my own tests for more than a year now, in vain.

Sorry I didn't manage to get youtube links on this post, but the songs are easy to find and the bass sounds I'm talking about are right at the beginning the first time the bass kicks in.

Might try using a EQ to push up around the 4k range to get a lot of click frequencies, which sounds like it might be coming from a pic instead of fingers. Not a bass player myself, just a thought from what I was hearing on the DT song.

Thank you guys! I will try both recommendations on Saturday with my whole gear. Seems like the 4k boost might give a nice punch if i boost the volume slightly on the eq as well, I tried boosting a frequency in the past but never knew which one was the right one to obtain that tone! I also forgot to mention I play finger style and also tried those dunlop picks that are fixed on the thumb but it makes it numb after a while and its harder to slap.

@Just Startin', I will definitely try your patch as well!

I'll keep you guys posted on the results!!
