eivindl Posted June 12, 2017 Share Posted June 12, 2017 I have played Variax almost exclusively since 2006 and "New Standard Tuning" (C-G-D-A-E-G) almost exclusively since 1989. The tuning benefits from multiscale necks to solve the tension problems (f.ex.a 26,5''-24'' fan). So before buying a Kiesel, Ibanez, Strandberg or similar and starting modifying it with Variax electronics, it would be interesting to know whether there are plans for a multiscale -- either based on the Standard, JTVs or the Shuriken-platform? If not, would it be possible to commission the building of Variax with a multiscale neck to the Yamaha Customs Shop or James Tyler? Well I don't get invited to L6 R&D meetings, but I'm gonna go ahead and guess "never in a million years". It's straight- up economics. Fanned fret guitars are about as tiny a market share as it gets...and Variax guitars are not exactly a household name as it is. Because.. it would be really awesome to get a slight fan on the Shuriken. Bends on the 27'' aren't pretty– Although I'm wondering if the longer scale length actually results in less pling or if they just exaggerated a bit for marketing purposes. eivindl Posted July 19, 2018 Author Share Posted July 19, 2018 Thanks for adding to this thread, katerlouis 1) Fanned Fret is becoming more common place, partly because some of the big factories have adapted production lines (with all respect for the important labor of pioneering artisans, economical guitar production is about scale) 2) To the comment of "pling". On wide tunings at least, such as mine (C G D A E G). there is a considerable improvement in intonation and sound quality. 3) I am still willing to order in advance for any Variax FF-model to support the endeavour. Gibson didn't file for bankruptcy because everyone suddenly abandoned Les Pauls en masse, in favor of fanned-fret guitars. The industry in general is in trouble because kids can't tear themselves away from Facebook long enough to learn an instrument... but I digress... I've still yet to actually see one of these things in the wild, either hanging on the wall in a store, or in someone's hands on stage... and I gig regularly, often with one or more other bands on the bill. The internet exaggerates the prevalence of everything. If you're seeking out guitar related stuff online, it might seem like you can't swing a dead cat without hitting one of these guitars... but that doesn't necessarily translate into real world numbers.
