Vidamus
I just picked up my brand new Shuriken Variax yesterday. After I got it home and set it up I found that the B string barely makes any sound when the variax is in modelling mode. This problem persists regardless of which guitar model, model variant or tuning setup is selected. When I pluck the B string, the initial attack of the sound is not heard at all, and then a quiet, smeared and distant tone will slowly fade in as the string rings out. It sounds a bit like when you listen to a reverb on 100% wet. Line 6 Monkey says that I have the latest version of all software and firmware for my Shuriken. I think I am going to try a factory reset next. Does anyone have any ideas for how I could try to resolve this? I am very loathe to have to return my new toy and be without it for days or weeks while it goes back for repair. Thanks, Sam

Thanks, Sam You can try re-flashing the firmware, but this doesn't sound like a software problem. More likely a dead piezo. If it's brand new, just get out while you can and get a guitar that works...this one is gonna be an albatross.
silverhead
...... Does anyone have any ideas for how I could try to resolve this? ..... Take it back and get a replacement. It sounds like a hardware problem, probably a faulty piezo.
Smashcraaft
I had the same issue on the g-string of my used Variax 600 backup guitar. So out of a simple intuition I pulled the string and let it slap on the piezo some times. I noticed the piezo came back to live but not for long so I repeated this procedure over the first week and from then some more single days until the problem disappeard at all (until today, 10 month later). If it's still a problem then it's probably the the piezo. What is described in the initial post here, sounds like a failing piezo.
Vidamus
Thanks for the comments everyone. I re-flashed the firmware and also reloaded the Shuriken settings bundle and it hasn't changed anything. Meanwhile, the high E string has also now stopped working in variax mode too. I have rung the shop where I bought it and they have asked me to bring it in so their guitar tech can take a look at it. Clarification just FYI, I found that the dead strings do work, it's just that the volume level is really low. The report I wrote before about there being no attack and then a smeared distant sound was just a result of the FX I was running at the time. If I use no FX and just turn the volume way up I can hear the string and the sound it makes is normal, but it's only 10% the volume of the other strings that work properly. Bummer, I waited months for this thing to arrive and now it has to go back. :(
cruisinon2
If I were you, I'd demand a replacement altogether...it's brand new. It should function as advertised. Stuff that's busted right out of the box has a nasty tendency of staying that way, even after "repairs". And in my experience, most of the world's "authorized service centers" leave much to be desired...
silverhead
...... And in my experience, most of the world's "authorized service centers" leave much to be desired... I agree that the OP should seek replacement rather than repair. But really..... you've had personal experience with most of the world's authorized service centres? The few you missed must have included the two I have personally dealt with, both of which provided timely and excellent service.

But really..... you've had personal experience with most of the world's authorized service centres? The few you missed must have included the two I have personally dealt with, both of which provided timely and excellent service. Gee, that's clever. My most humble apologies for exaggerating a bit to make a point...and congratulations on your experience. However that doesn't change the fact that ours is a disposable economy. Replacing defective merchandise is quite often cheaper than repairing it, and hardly anything is made to last anymore. Once "we" collectively decided that this is how we wanted the world to work, the demand for independent repair shops, and the knowledgeable folks who used to work there, plummeted. They're used to be places like that everywhere...now they hardly exist at all. Now, for most things... and especially musical gear, you're "authorized service center" is the retailer you bought it from. If you want the 19 yr old "technician" at GC, with his minutes of experience fixing your gear for you, more power to you.
silverhead
Oh. Now I know what you meant to say....... . I like hyperbole and exaggeration as much as the next guy. However, that doesn't change the fact that the only two experiences I've had were excellent.
psarkissian
Narrows it down to a connector not fully inserted or a failed piezo.
