Looper Question - Changing The Tone

Hello Forum:

Just purchased the M13.  My first Line 6 product and the first time using a Looper.  My question is how do I record one loop and then change the sound to play over it without changing what's already recorded.

What I'd like to do is loop a basic chord progression with a clean tone and a little chorus and then play lead over that with a little bit of crunch/overdrive.  What's happening is I record/play the clean loop and then when I add an OD pedal (in the M13) for my lead it also adds OD to what I just recorded - the loop doesn't stay clean.

I've tried messing with the Pre/Post switch but that only seems to make what's recorded a lot louder.  I've tried recording the chord progression and exiting the looper before I turn on the OD and it doesn't make a difference.  I've seen guys do this on YouTube but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Thank you,

Bob
