Creating bass and strings sounds using IRs

Hi everyone

 

I'm new to both: Helix and the world of IRs (and even the english language - I hope you guys understand me)  :)

 

I've been reading for hours now, and as far as I understand the topic, it should be possible to make my acoustic guitar sound (more or less) like a bass guitar. For now I'm using an octaver and lots of EQing, but I think IRs should be a much better way (if they can make electrics sound like acoustics...)

 

And then a kind of "ambient-orchestra-strings" sound would be great as well. And again I'm hoping to achieve that with IRs (at the moment tons of delay, chorus... is doing the job).

 

So at the bottom line I have 2 questions:

 

a.) Can I do that?

b.) Where do I find suitable IRs (Bass & Orchestra/Violins...). Free ones would be nice to try, but basically it's not a problem if they cost a view bugs.

 

What I found for myself is 3 SIGMA. Looks very promising.

Just in case anyone would ever be reading this an was hoping for an answer:

 

Meanwhile I bought the Helix LT and created a bass-sound for my acoustic. Bass IRs do help a lot. Still using an Octaver as well, but the IR is a great help and improves the final result significantly.

ir's will shape the tone but wont work magic in creating the sounds you are after... as i think you found with the bass ir- you'll still need an octave pedal..

I suppose you could use the one of the pitch blocks on the Helix to transpose the pitch down 1 octave along with a bass amp block and a bass cab block or IR. Not sure how convincing this would be using an acoustic guitar as the source but it is probably doable and who knows, it might sound great. I don't know how to get a violin sound at all on the Helix although I would not be surprised if someone figures it out at some point, maybe someone already has.

string sound will probably be best with a small swell into the note (volume pedal?) compression and liberal reverb no need for an IR

 

Bass - pitch shift/octaver plus compression, possible touch wah add/or chorus again I question the need for an IR

Here's a wacky idea for string sounds. The Mel9 from Electro harmonix. 

 

To replicate a bass guitar, using the pitch shift and doing single note lines through a bass amp model can work really well.

 

If you're serious about ambiance, there's some wacky stuff in the article in my signature. I'd copy a youtube url, but suddenly that's not working on this computer.

As I said: An Octaver is already in use. Compression, EQ ... as well. To my ears the IR brings some nature to the (artificially) deeper sound. Not a Bass guitar, of course, but I really like the result.

 

For creating a "string-kind-of-sound" (don't need the exakt sound, but something that's doing the job in my arrangements) I'm missing the "slow gear" from my GT-100. It automatically produces a swell sound. But there's nothing like that on the Helix  :o

There is. In the last update, an "Autoswell" effect was added. In addition, two delays were added that have Autoswell incorporated.

 

They trigger a bit differently than the Slow Gear but with a bit of tweaking, they are quite effective.

Any tips for adjusting the "Autoswell". For me it works not by far not as good as the GT-100 "Slow Gear"  :( .

 

 

The threshold has a small range to work - wich allows me no dynamic in my playing. And the starting volume can't be set to 0?!

 

Sorry for my english. I'm trying to put this in the right words for about 15 minutes now and can only hope that you guys are understanding me  :rolleyes:
