Low Electric Guitar Input Level From Ux1

 Share

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I am currently cracking my head to figure out how to increase electric guitar level from Line 6 UX1. I have set maximum level for volume both from guitar knob and ableton volume control. Its really frustrating to see the waveforms are pathetically small in the recorded audio tracks.

So, i tried switching audio interface, i tried using my focusrite scarlette 2i2. Instantly, the waveforms are much more larger, at least 3 to 4 times, might be due to their better preamps. But, 2 weakpoints, no full range of Line 6 guitar effects (as I am not using UX1) and the noise level is very high ( a lot of buzzing sound).

How should I solve this problem? I do not intend to buy a preamp or a new guitar. Is there anyway I can boost the signal level from UX1, it will be such a waste that I can't put those amazing effects into audible waveforms.

Thanks in advance for all your advices!

Are you capturing wet/dry or both?

Do you a POD Studio UX1 that comes with the POD Farm 2 plug-in?

A typical work flow would be to capture wet and dry stereo tracks simultaneously, then add the plug-in to the dry track post processing.

You can configure this in the POD Farm mixer for sends 1 thru 4.

You would then enable those sends in your DAW.

Also make sure you are using Line6 ASIO UX1 as you device in your DAW.

Hi Hueywen,

A good way to increase the gain is by clicking the +18db button in the mixer view of Pod Farm and then lowering the fader to where you find it is right. This is a simple digital gain of db, so it's not like increasing it with a preamp - although it depends how you look at it I suppose. Anyway, it's a quick way of getting levels up. As you say, the levels are low, but people say that the devices were deliberately made this way to give plenty of headroom for effects being added etc.

I think the amps in pod farm are maybe designed to work with lower inputs.

Actually, I have just remembered a test I did a while ago. I'll see if I can find it. I tried two guitars and my bass I think, and humbucker and single coil pickups to see the different levels I would get coming through from the ux2. I think I concluded that it depended on my attack with the pick. That sounds obvious :)  but I just mean that the reason I was getting low input was that I tended to be a lighter player in terms of an average pick attack over a song. If I played really hard, and the input had have been made higher in the devices, then it would have gone into distortion. I think that by having it a bit lower allows enough room for heavy pickers. This is just an idea.

Since that test, I think I have often played with a stronger attack - just because of the sound I've been liking lately.

It would be interesting to know whether you get levels going over 0db when picking hard (with dry guitar) on the focusrite and what a similar attack gave by using the ux1.

God Bless,

David

I had the same problem. I used Reaper to record my audio but every time I would record I waoul see no waves at all. It just came up as this straight line the whole time as if it was muted while recording. I would play back and if I turned the track up almost all the way I could faintly hear something being recorded. Even if I turned up the db on POD farm and everything. Now these other suggestions could be better ionoz but I just went to the recording section of sounds on my computer and your interface should be listed on recording devices. Just double click it and go to the levels section. Turn up that level till whatever is necessary for you and yeah. That worked for me. The audio going in was apparent when I did that and not completely silent!
