Background Noise With Ux2 And Pod Farm

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I've had my Line 6 UX2 for about 2 years now.  I love it overall but there is something very wrong with the sound that prevent me from doing any recording (with Ableton Live).  I have some background noise that keep coming on a regular interval, about 30 seconds apart, constantly.  So every time I play, I here that cracking sound every 30 seconds or so and il will last for about 2 seconds.

I have just made sure I am up to date with software and drivers but I still have this issue.  It is impossible for me to record something because anyone would hear this sound over the music.  I have a single electro-acoustic guitar connected to my UX2, no mic and I use headphones.  I made sure any gain button not needed is at the lowest.  At first I thought there was interference from my electrical system in my place but now I do not know.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hey, thanks to both who shared some thoughts.  To Yo-C, the noise I am getting are not exactly what I can hear on that youtube video but they might just be originating from the same problem.

By talking to some in-store professionals in musical audio, it seems my problem might be a faulty USB controller.  One assured me that I would solve this by installing a PCMCIA usb card in my laptop, thus bypassing the built-in usb low-end controller.  Unfortunately, my laptop does not have a PCMCIA slot so I'm doomed.  One idea I had was to try with a shielded usb cable (the one with the round beed at one end) but again I was told that would be useless.  Apparently a usb cable cannot transfer interference from the pc to the device.  But then, how come they make those usb cable?  I have ordered one such cable and will try as soon as I get it and let you know.

Hi thunderoller, I haven't resolved my problem despite my attempts.  I am really disapointed by rhe device and lack of help from Line6. I will look for another device in a near future. Pretty sure it won't be from Line6 this time.

FYI..

This is a user forum.

Official Line6 reps rarely frequent them.

Have you contacted Line6?

Also, can you post a clip of the noise?

Not that it will solve your issue, but can you try this on another computer?

If it works fine on another pc, it just may be the USB chipset in your laptop and you will have eliminated a faulty UX2.

Not sure who told you this, but IMHO they are very much mistaken. Interference can absolutely be be picked up and/or transferred by a devices or cables.

Even your guitar!!

Hey man, I just had this exact problem for awhile and just figured it out!!!! open up the standalone player for pod farm, open the preferences menu. Go to the hardware tab, and click on "ToneDirect settings". This will open up the UX2 through your computer's sound card wizard and you can adjust the buffer size from extra small to medium. literally fixes the problem completely without adding any noticeable latency. I did do this on a mac so it may be a little different on a PC. But I would imagine its  an identical process.

Hope it works for you!

I don't know about you guys but the first time I installed everything... I could hear TONS of background noise...ala (Interference) like when you use computer onboard audio.  I was very confused by this. I also thought that the sound coming out of the headphones was only...somewhat decent sounding.  So.... I took the USB cable and used my computer cases USB and not the actual motherboard's USB and guess what.  Everything was crisp and clear and sounding like I would imagine it should sound. I also got the MIC input to work with the MXL 990 which it would work before. All I got before was pops/clicks....and barely ANY sound out of the mic.

Everything works perfect now. Just by switching USB ports.

Although...PS:  In WinXP i'm having the exact same issues when I installed the drivers and Gearbox the first time...very distorted sound and the mic doesn't seem to want to work properly.  I'm a bit baffled in XP because I switched USB ports and it made no difference and in XP is really what I use to record in Cubase 5.  So actually it's more important that I fix this issue... Perhaps a reboot, then switch ports again...no idea on what actually needs to be done but I'll re-edit this post again if rebooting, then switching ports again fixes this.

(Update)

My UX2 device does not like having the XLR cable connected at the same time when I start the device. I can only use my MXL 990 properly if I plug it in AFTER the device is started without the XLR cable in the port. Not sure why either. It also won't play sounds properly with that cable installed...lots of noise, crackling and distortion.

I had a static issue on a 2014 Mac Mini and the UX2. I had static in Logic Pro X and while using Pod Farm 2. Guess what fixed it for me? I rebooted the computer.. voila no more static.

I feel like an idiot for trying all these other fixes without rebooting first. Derp.
