Request A Tone

I have a tone, tried to get it on my HD500, but was very unhappy with the result.

It is the live-version of Please from U2 and I mean the area 3:25 - 4:10. I know, Edge used during this period a Lovetone Meatball (auto wah filter) and I think it was this pedal. But no chance for me to copy it.

If you can help, I will be very happy.

Thanks in advance.

If you could get the tone from this track you would really make me the "happiest guy on earth"

Zappa really had killer tones!

I would also really love the solo sounds of this track (3:24 and especially 7:15).

Wow great response! I will start working on them asap in the order they were received. One thing to note, I'm almost certain the tones will only get you close because none of us have the same gear. I am playing A Buildanax strat www.buildanax.com mahogany body maple neck with Lincoln Brewster pick ups. I run from the guitar into the pod out stereo to a Carvin TS100.  http://www.carvinguitars.com/products/TS100. It's a tubed stereo power amp. Mine has EL34's. From there to two 8 ohm line 6 speakers from an old Flextone II XL. So unless you have the same gear it will not sound the same as what I'm hearing when I create the tones. With that said. I'll get started. Also I may not use the amp that the guitarist uses. ie George Lynch uses some Laney amp heads on "Under lock and key". Line 6 has no version of that amp. So many time I use the best tools I have to get the tone. MY EARS! Even though the amp model, or pedal model may not be what the original guitarist used, I go for the tone, not the pic.  So know I will get to work. I love the youtube vids.

I run in stereo. Please let me know if you're in mono or stereo, I'll try to use the same setting as you do. Also I have my global out put set on studio. That way I get the most out of the speaker modeling capabilities. I hope this helps. GC

P.S. George Lynch fans check this out. http://www.gearslutz.com/board/high-end/77436-george-lynch-tone.html

This is what I came up with. Use the wah pedal to help get the sound. http://line6.com/customtone/tone/240428/

I would be eternally grateful if you could match one of the most sought after tones ever...Eric Johnson's lead sound for Cliffs of Dover.

The unaccompanied lead starts at :59

Good luck and thanks a million.

I've tried that one many ways...here is what I have right now. http://line6.com/customtone/tone/240455/

Interesting approach, not far off, I need to try with some different guitars, had the jaguar HH handy and that wasn't quite working for it, but i could hear the intent in there...

(just happen to have roundwound 12's on it too)

i know it's a tele on the recording so i'll drag that out at some point and see if it lines it up.

thanks again for the effort.

Thanks for the "Cliffs" attempt.  Honestly I think you're in the ballpark but tonally not all there. I think the secret is in the use of the "ecoplex" type of delay and the use of the post mic reverb (maybe a plate reverb?) Those two elements are very difficult to dial in and get right. See the video below for a step by step tutorial that left me tweaking for hours with no avail:-)  I personally have yet to do any better.  Perhaps the precise "cliffs" tone is out of reach for the POD HD series.

Yes I hate the sound of delay before amp. I always use delay post amp. It's much cleaner. I also don't go for what pic line6 uses or even what pedal or amp is "supposed to be used". I use what sounds good on the rig I'm using. If it "supposed" to be a Marshall, but the Fender sounds better I use it. I do this because I'm going for sound and not what Line 6 says a Marshal should sound like. It like reading tab. Most of the time the guy making the tab is not the guitarist so they write what they think it should be. However there may be six other ways the play the same riff. It's just they way I like it. That's why I don't use the "ecoplex". If you have a customtone I would love to here it. I think I'll look right now. Fill free to make the changes to my tone so I can hear what you are talking about.
