player99
Can I use the James Tyler interface to access my PC and Workbench with my old Variax?
phil_m
Yeah - they're the same thing. The interface hasn't changed.
Charlie_Watt
The new JTV interface may be electrically the same as the old Variax USB interface but it is a small black thing about 1/4 the size of the original and it has a USB dongle hanging out one side. I have not tried this with my old Variax but I am sure it will work. Neither one powers the Variax through USB. I suspect that the reason is that the Variax violates the USB spec on 5V current. player99
I tried it and could not get it to work... I am wondering if I am doing something wrong.
player99
and I used batteries to power the Variax. The light on the interface did not change from red to green on the Variax side. The one I have is a clear plastic top unit with usb on one side and the Variax cable on the other.

I didn't know they made a different one... The one that came with my JTV69US looks the same the same as the old one to me. My doesn't have a dongle hanging out the side. player99
Are you able to get an old Variax to sink up and work with Workbench?
Charlie_Watt
Yes my new JTV69S came with a different USB interface. 1/3 the size black plastic with a dongle cord for the USB side. It works the same and I think it is interchangeable with the old unit shown here. I bought workbench years ago for my 500 and it came with the clear plastic interface. player99
I could not get the old variax to sink up. The light on the guitar side of the connector was red, not green.

Charlie_Watt
Did you plug in the 1/4 inch jack? It won't be powered without that. That should turn the Variax side light to green.
