Line6 Edit Requires Java Se 6 Runtime On Mac Os X 10.8.5

Picked up a used Line X3 Live, struggled to figure out which app allows sharing / downloads of patches (not linked to on the X3 Live Mac downloads page, nor does Monkey list it), eventually found mention of Custom Tone and Line6 Edit, and managed to download and install Line6 Edit.

However, it will not run on my system and keeps throwing the following error dialog.

"To open "Line 6 Edit," you need a Java SE 6 runtime. Would you like to install one now? Not Now / Install"

However, I currently have Java 7 installed from Oracle which supersedes 6 which was managed by Apple and is no longer offered on the latest Mac OS X versions.

System:

* Macbook Pro 15" Early 2008 2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4GB

* Mac OS X 10.8.5

* Java 7 Update 45  (latest version)

Just illustrating the difficulty I'm having finding this information as a new user.

* Visit the X3 Live page: http://line6.com/legacy/podx3live   and observe it's fairly non-functional. But in the header there's "Custom Tone".

* Visit the Line6 Custom Tone page, there's patches galor, but there's nothing clearly indicating what app to use: http://line6.com/customtone/browse/podx3/

* Click Help to hopefully get some help, there's no direct downloads for whatever app should be used, and it only textually references Line6 Edit.

Or try this.

* Visit the Downloads page and select POD X3 Live and Mac OS X: http://line6.com/software/index.html

* You have to scroll 2/3 of the way down the [very long] page to even find GearBox and it doesn't clearly mention what it's function is.

I'm not at home with my X3 Live to check, but I did install Monkey and I don't recall it including an option to install GearBox, Line6 Edit, or any other obvious software to help me out with this.

Thanks for your help, I'll try GearBox later this week and report back.

Perhaps you have an older version of Monkey? I haven't used an x3 in a long time, but gearbox was always presented as an option.

some people prefer line6 edit and it works too... although apples pretty strict with the java thing, so that's where most of the issues come from.

  • 2 months later...

have you downloaded gearbox? it does not require java.

Apple intentionally restricts old versions of Java in the name of security...

the older line6 software will not likely be updated.

you can research and perhaps restore an old version of java on the mac...

no easy task basically involves alot of terminal hacking...

you'd have to look that info up on the web though, as it's outside of most users knowledge on this site.

I too can not get the software to run on a MAC due to a Java error. Judging by the date of the last post, I guess there isn't a solution for the MacIntosh Issue.

I will be the first to admin, I am new to using Line 6 products and for the most part I am trying to follow the Line 6 instructions, which are not without there own challenges. Since the instructions don't mention Gearbox, I did a search on it.

The supported O/S does not include MAC  (Again I am on the Line6 documentation) It only support Windows XP,Vista Win7 and Win8.

Tomorrow I will try it again with an old PC, to see if I have any better, Luck

Thanks for your suggestion

Cheers

I didn't see any references to gearbox in any of the instructions, but I did a search on it. It sounds like a decent product (although I not sure exactly if it replaces workbench) From the site it would seem that it is only available for Windows XP, Vista Win7 and Win8.  Based on the frustration I have experienced this evening, it looks like the best route is to abandon the Mac and did out an old PC and start trying that.

Thanks for your suggestion

Cheers
