Where Do I Start? Pod Hd500

I purchased a POD HD500 almost one year ago and never used it due to work and gigging schedules.  The only thing I did was power it up, connect it to a PA to make sure it worked...cycled through a few canned patches.  Almost a year later, I have a bit of time and want to use this unit at my gigs.....no amp if possible...just FOH and monitors.

Well I have noticed there have been some firmware releases and edit software updates. Here are my questions:

Do I have to make every update or can I just get the latest updates?

Are there any good instructionals or videos for the POD HD500 to get me going quickly?  I find the stock pacthes unusable.

I have been gigging for 41 years, I am not a beginner.  Is it easier to use the PC interface to make your patches and edit rather than using the knobs on the POD HD500?

I am only after a couple of tones.....I play southern rock and blues.  I use Fender and Dr Z amps.  I need a clean and overdriven sound as well as a great lead tone....some reverb, at times some delay and chorus.  That is it but I want it to sound like my real amp.

Websites, forums.....please point me in the right direction.  I fear I am way behind in technology.....................

You can just install the latest update; no need to go progressively through them all.

Instructions and videos:

- Pilot's Guide and Advanced Guide (see Product Manuals under the Support tab at top of this page)

- videos and other documents (see Videos and Knowledge Base, also under Support tab; filter for HD500)

Yes, it is easier to use HD500 Edit for serious patch setup and editing sessions; you can use the HD500 itself but I tend to do that only for tweaking.

Make sure your output mode is Studio/Direct for going to PA/monitors. See the Customtone tab at top of this page for starter patches. Filter as desired (device, artist, song, ...).

Have fun!! It's a great device, but plan on taking some time to get used to it. I wouldn't commit to using it at a gig until you are comfortable doing so.

After setting your output mode to Studio/Direct, change your input modes so one is Guitar and the other is Variax. It makes a difference.

The pre-loaded patches are worthless for practical purposes, so try building one from scratch. I had a lot of success right away using the PC edit program. See if you can duplicate your analog rig. Then download some custom tones off the site and see what you like.
