snakefinger13 Posted November 10, 2013 Share Posted November 10, 2013 HD500 to EV ZLX-12P powered speaker with two dual 1/4-XLR inputs, both with dedicated volume control in addition to one master volume control for speaker overall. Three questions: If I use XLR outputs from HD500, should I go ahead and use both left and right? Same question for 1/4 outputs with additional question. Will I need to use TRS cables if I go this route or will unbalanced work properly? The dedicated input volume controls on the speaker each have graduations marked "Line" (below unity) and "Mic" (above unity). I would expect to use "Line" for 1/4 connection and "Mic" for XLR connection since I have read that HD500 XLR outputs are mic level. Is this assumption correct? If using the 1/4 outs you can just use the left which will sum both sides to mono since you are only using one speaker. Probably your best bet. Save the XLR to feed FOH if necessary. Set it to Line for both XLR and 1/4 and be sure to set your POD 1/4 out to Line on the switch next to the expression pedal. These look damn good for the price, let us know how they perform! Thanks for the quick reply. For now I'm going with the two XLR. This is pretty much an at-home setup, at least for now. So far I've only tested with MP3 output, first from laptop and then through HD500. Both sounded very good for single speaker. That also helped me go through the speaker DSP menus and settings. Once I get everything setup in the room I'll plug the guitar in and start figuring out those settings. In the past I've used regular amps and have never really been satisfied, whether going through front, FX return, even 4CM (way too many variables with that one). Since this is primarily a hobby I finally settled on using the most straight-forward method I could find. After a lot of reading on a lot of boards that seemed to be using a FRFR solution with studio/direct setting on HD500. One speaker seems like enough for now to setup some simple patches and concentrate on getting familiar with the amps and DEP. Figure on starting there and working my way into the effects. My problem is this , when i play a song through Widows Media Player to the HD500 the sound /songs seem to stutter . Any ideas why this is happening? Charlie_Watt Posted January 7, 2014 Share Posted January 7, 2014 That could be. I just got an HD500x. I was used to the older pods. I think most of the older ones gave you mono on either L or R 1/4 inch if you only had one plugged in. I am now using two XLR to my EV PA speaker and it's working great. The balanced inputs solved a nasty ground loop problem I had when running my HD500x with my Laptop plugged into power for charging. I could not use my tube amp at all with the pod connected with USB if the laptop was not on battery power. Lots of hum that went away if I unplugged the laptop charger. The EV PA is dead quiet even with the Laptop being powered. Since the EV has two XLR inputs I am running both the L and R into it and it sounds great - especially with Acoustic models on my JTV.
