Hi guys,

Such an amazing community on here. Love the support and ethos of the forum - so much better than some others where you feel like you're treading on eggshells to not get flamed.

Anyhoo,

I am looking to upgrade my £30 logitech awful speakers to some studio monitors. Dont have a big budget sadly but need to know what sort of monitors i can use to run from the x3.

Basically i use my x3 bean as my soundcard, dont use pod farm just dial in my settings into the pod and hit record in cubase.

Help my little noob brain!

Cheers guys and girls,

Ross

There's not really any complexity that's beyond your 'little noob brain' here. :P The general rule applies: the more you spend, the better it will sound.

Any self-powered (that means 'active') studio monitors will be better than your Logitech speakers. Define your upper budget limit, then compare offerings among manufacturers. The most commonly recommended brand here seems to be Rockit. They come in a range of sizes/price, increasing in price with a corresponding increase in the most important design factor: speaker size. For good results at reasonable volume levels I recommend a speaker size of at least 5". The bigger the better within your budget.

Most reasonably-sized audio equipment stores have a range of studio monitors set up for display/testing in the store. Bring in an mp3 player with a selection of your favourite tunes/sounds that you would like to use as a test base. Try these sounds on a variety of speakers and choose the speakers that sound best to you.

I'm not sure which ones exactly that you're referring to, but most studio speakers have those inputs. At worst you may need RCA or XLR adapters to fit your 1/4" cables, or buy hybrid cables that have the 1/4" at one end for your X3 and whatever connector you need at the other end for your monitors. For best results, set your X3 output mode to Studio/Direct, and connect to the Line inputs on your monitors.
