Adding A Poker Chip To A Jtv59?

Recommended Posts

I just bought a cherry sunburst JTV59 and would like to add a poker chip to the toggle switch.  The switch seems to be recessed in the cavity, which isn't particularly appealing to me.  The problem I have is that the threading doesn't actually clear the recessing, so I cannot properly fasten the poker chip.  Has anyone else got this to work?  Also, can anyone recommend a specific poker chip that matches the ivory/bone color of the pickup rings?  The cream one I have from Gibson is more peachy tone than yellow.

You really only have 3 options:

1) Replace the switch with one with a longer thread.

2) Carve out the wood at the back of the switch to make more thread stick out

3) Cut into the wood on the front to recess the poker chip.

(1) is probably your best option if you can find an appropriate switch.

If you can get your poker chip thin enough (2) may be an option.

A switch is a switch but you need to know how many contacts it has on the back.  It's a three position switch.  If you elect to mess with it you will void the guarantee if you care about that kind of thing.  It looks nice the way it is so I am not sure I would fool with that kind of cosmetic change.

That switch is more complicated than a standard 3-way switch. It also has digital micro switches to sense the position when in modeling mode. They ride on the switch housing and are toggled by the lever position. I would suggest looking into the control cavity to see if there is an additional backnut on the threaded shaft that would allow further extension if removed.

I wonder if it's possibly to carve the poker chip so that the bottom section is the size of the recessed area, and the top section has a hole the size of the nut carved into it? That might retain the structural integrity of the poker chip, while still allowing it to be attached to the switch without any changes to the guitar at all.
