Qsc Copying Line 6?

Recommended Posts

Saw this over on the Harmony Central forum. Looks very familiar, but still overall preferring the Line 6 setup from what I can see. I do like all the aux outs (8) and two are even in stereo. But, I have had lots of mixers and gear. Decent stuff too. But nothing has compared to the Line 6 DreamStage setup. This unit is only 6lbs (the 16 model) and I see no way that it is going to be able to link to speakers like the M20d. I also hear I it will be listing around the $1000 mark.

Everything considered, and especially the fact that I now own some of the best speakers and board, I think the M20d is the winner. Generally, I have learned in this world, you get what you pay for.....generally. And especially with audio gear. Although I was proven wrong with the stagesource speakers!

I do like the dl1608. And it has some great features, and a good price, and I would look that way IF it connected to any speakers like the M20d does to its stagesource speakers. With no help, I can pretty much go trailer to stage and ready to play with a good sound, in about 30-45 min. 4 monitor mixes too.

But two things that Line 6 has that no one around their price range has is the stagesource speakers and the way it links to them, and, my favourite still, is the recallable input gain levels, plus the ability to actually bring the gain down automatically when the drummers for gets heavy and begins to clip, or maybe the guitar player or even the vocalist gets a little louder....(but never the bass). It is awesome. Few nights went by in the past where I didn't have to adjust an input gain....and always down.

Again, I like the dl1608, and if I still had my old....but very good speakers, I would likely own a DL1608 right now.

Also, I need nothing else in my rack for anything front end or monitor wise. Even with the dl1608, and likely the new QSC, I would still want some kind of processor and crossover. For me it would be my driverack. But today, all that is in my main rack is a computer, power, and some IEM transmitters. It's pretty small, and does everything.

I'd like the Line 6 setup if their StageSource speakers didn't cost an arm and a leg, lol. I still have my full PA set up in about 30 minutes.. Including the Mixer & Rack, snake, 2 mains with 2 subs, and 3 monitors. I guess the mixer was a no brainer for me, as I already had an iPad. It's possible that if I didn't have the iPad, the extra $500 could have been used to throw an extra $250 at each main driver to pick up them L2M's.

Yes. I mentioned in the other forum that the fader view on the QSC looks very similar to the line 6. (But the dual meter view in the fader view on the line 6 is awesome...I out and output meters on same screen).

And as for fader views, they have looked the same on many mixers for years! I guess, if line 6 (and Mackie even sooner I guess) have laid down the first of the touch mixers, we can expect many more to come along and look ther same over the years. And my kids, may never want to touch a slider! Unlike some of the old school sound men who think we are crazy for going this route.

While the QSC, the Behringer, the Mackie, and the Allen & Heath digital mixers are all awesome in their own ways, the StageScape has some different features, functions, and goals that those mixers don't have.

The biggest difference is the goal of the mixer.  To me, the StageScape is for a band that doesn't have a sound tech to make everything happen.  The functions are very musician friendly, like the X/Y graphs for the quick tweaks.  The graphics of the stage and instruments are designed to be very visually friendly, helping someone who doesn't know channel strips identify the players.  Same goes for the auto trim, it's designed so that no one has to sit at the board to make everything happen.  What's interesting is how deep the rabbit hole goes for the StageScape.  The 4, 5, and 6 band EQ WITH the spectrum analysis on each channel.  The multi band compressor on each channel, and on the mains!  The sub bass generator for kick drums.  There is some really deep stuff in the mixer for making a band sound like the studio.  There are not too many mixers with those functions.  All of the other digital mixers are designed for a sound guy.  Most of the features are there, but they are not presented in the same way.  Heck, they all have BETTER features.  But the nice thing about the digital mixers is that they can be upgraded with a quick RAM flash :)

Gotta say, my StageScape rocks.  Was going to get the Behringer X16 last year, but it never materialized.  Maybe they'll get it out this year, but I'm really glad I got the StageScape.

Very well said dscheidt.

I was looking closer at the qsc and really, M20d looks like a much better built piece of equipment as well. Made for the road. Not regretting my choice at all.

Also, I find the stage source speakers bad in all as far as price goes. After comparing them to higher priced yorkville stuff. Which is popular here in Canada, and I do really like their higher end speakers. And, Yorkville is the Line 6 distributor in Canada.

I find the M20d to be an excellent mixer for the price and the L6 link is phenomenal. I couple my L3t's with some Yorkville subs by running the line out from the L3t's into the subs, controlling the subs from their output gains and my sound is awesome!! I am sure the subs I am using were belonging to DIGITAL SOUND because the Long and McQuade dealer in Toronto had to get them from out west. They are now in my Basement in Saint Kitts here in the Caribbean.

M20d. " Hard to beat!,"

Those subs are great. They were the LS801p's and I bet they cost a bit to get to the Caribbean at 145lbs each! Those subs are VERY common in Canada, but mine were a little more unique as I added two pole mounts to the tops of them. So there would be three pole cups on top. I used to use two NX55p's over them on each side, and after I switched to the EF500p's, I would use the extra pole mounts for lights. Worked great. They are hard to beat, but in my application, live country/rock band, they have been beat. In the complete picture. With Stagesource speakers all around.

I agree with dscheidt in how he describes who the M20D is designed for… us guys that have to do the sound for the band while we are also IN the band, and aren't necessarily pro sound guys.

A comment from a fellow musician who attended our gig last night… He saw us last month at another venue that had a good sound guy. He thought we sounded great. Then he saw us last night and said we sounded a lot better with our M20d and L3t setup. (Can't wait to get an L3s into the mix). He was amazed that I was doing the sound from stage.

Aside from wanting just one more monitor out (5 pc band, 4 monitor sends, someone gets left out) I've totally enjoyed the m20d experience.

Two gigs with it so far, and friends who have heard us before say we sound much better. I agree the parametric eqs everywhere with live real time analyzers is genius.

Having said that though, we would have looked seriously at these new QSC's if they were out when we went shopping. Competition is good for us end users..

Like the QSC. But I have to have matching equipment. So the Stagescape stays.

I am like that too! But one thing I don't think the QSC has is the recallable input gains, or the auto trim. One of my favourite features. I don't use auto trim to set up, but I do count on it to keep its eye on the guitar player, and the drummers, later I the evening, heavy foot.

  • 1 year later...

Can somebody help this dummy? I'm looking at purchasing a soundscape mixer. I was curious as to if I can run out of that and into my current powered mixer for power until I can afford a power amp? I currently use a peavey 8600. Any help would be appreciated. I have unpowered mains but I do have powered subs.

Yes you could use the power amps in the XR8600. You just plug from the Mains outs in the Stagescape to the jacks marked "power amp in 1&2" on the XR8600. You woud need XLR to 1/4" cables.

How are you hooking up your powered subs at the moment. You should probably run from Stagescape's Mains out to the subs and then from the outputs on the subs up to the power in jacks on the XR8600

We do this at one venue. They have a Carvin "box mixer" already set up, driving a power amp for house mains and monitor wedges. They leave a cable loose from the amp for monitors.

As Don said, I patch the M20d main out (left only; we run mono) to one line-input channel of the Carvin, and our Mon-B send to another. On the Carvin I dial one of those channels to house mains, the other to house monitor output. EQ gets set to neutral with FX off.

Thus we're just running our two "line signals" through their house system, without touching their power-amp connections. We plug in our floor wedge and away we go.

I've attached a schematic. (Ritchie, my guitarist, uses the passive floor wedge; the powered monitors for Bob and I are driven directly by the M20d.)
