Vdi Cable Options?

Recommended Posts

Anyone have a VDI cable I can get in the USA? Anyone use this or have any feedback on it's quality?

I bought one of these and it is top notch professional grade, not stiff, great connectors and custom order to length.  Each individually made in their factory.  Around 30 bucks...

What length did you end up going with? Sounds like you did 20', which is as you said $30. I am reading odd things about the $30 Line6 cable that is sold in the links above..

Thanks!

I got the $30 one from musicians friend...it's better than what comes with the guitar (but then again smoke signals or a carrier pigeon would also be an improvement over that one...), but still not great. Not the same feel as a standard 1/4" cable and it gets twisted too easily. I'm thinking a braided cover would be better, and I recall seeing one on the forum somewhere...not sure which thread tho.

I ended up ordering one of each; 20' from BestTronics, and whatever the length is of the Musicians Friend / Line6 cable.

I concur, the cable they ship with the JTV is only half there, though it's useful in terms of connecting to the VDI interface box, since the one end is unshielded.

This way I will have two cables with full shielding / locking, for those "just in case" moments.

Will report back when they have both arrived, and I will post a direct comparison!

Cheers ya'all, and thanks for the quick feedback!

FWIW, I got the Line6 one and have thus far had zero issues in 4 months of strictly at home use.

This is the one cruisinon2 speaks of in his reply.
Cool VDI Cable
from Dunkin_Dal
http://line6.com/support/topic/958-cool-vdi-cable/
his first post says: 15 ft Braided VDI cable for sale $35
he gives prices for other lengths in the thread and photos

He makes them himself and uses shrink wrap on the ends
He's in South Boston and ships fast I have an old Line6 VDI that I bought back when I got my 1st Variax 300 YEARS ago and it's going good to this day - the spare Line6 cable I bought years later is a real piece of sheeit.

I too am struggling with the Line 6 brand 20 foot VDI cable. It is a complete pain in the a$$ on stage. Ive about tripped numerous times on stage with it and my band mates hate it. Ive tried everything to make it less stiff including baking it in the sun and using a hairdryer.... etc etc. Does anybody know if the cable in the link provided will work and also if you have one, is it stiff as well.... Feeling discouraged here.

Thanks

Beau

I can only say that this cable is NOT stiff, very well made, touring musician caliber and you can order to whatever length you want... stop searching and try one...

Well, I finally have both VDI cables; I bought the "Line6" VDI cable from Musicians Friend and one from Best Tronics.

When I ordered the Best Tronics cable, apparently my browser running on Windows XP gave me some issues on my online order. It put the order partially through their system; I got a confirmation email, but the order never actually got placed on their end. I called and Debbie was super nice, and she squared it up ASAP - I called Friday, and the cable arrived today! Anyway, if your browser window crashes or acts up, maybe give them a call if you place an online order; sounds like this issue was on my end of things though.

So, cable reviews:

-The Line6 cable.

Good cable, seems sturfy. It works just fine, I've been using it since it arrived. It's relatively flexible, and at least cable winds properly without a ton of problems. It's got the shielding on both ends, so as an upgrade to using just a regular ethernet cable, this is way more appropriate. But as others have stated, the actual surface of the outside wrap is oddly wrinkled, and is a funky texture, and as such lays a little odd when you are connecting up the JTV to the HD.

- Best Tronics.

So, in this cable shootout, BestTronics is THE Clear winner, hands down, do not hesitate, buy your VDI cable from them! Also shielded on both ends, but the real comparison point is that the cable wrap exterior of this cable is way, way better than the Line6 cable. This cable is familiar to what you'd expect of an instrument cable, rubberized, even surface, smooth instrument cable feel.

It's packaged nicely; comes with a velcro cable wrap already on it, and the consistency / feel of the outside of the cable wrap is FAR superior to the Line6 VDI cable. This feels / looks / lays down like a regular guitar or XLR cable. It is also made here in Illinois, USA, which counts for something these days.

It only ended up being a few bucks more than the L6 cable, and now I have the L6 cable as my backup, which is always a good idea with a cable like this.

"Hey, anyone got a spare ethernet cord?" is a question no one with our gear ever wants to ask on stage.!!
