Now, Here's My Idea Of A 'dream Rig'...

Recommended Posts

Ok, so here's the thing... I've got a Variax 700 electric (great guitar, love it) and an HD500 (again, love it). I've been using them in a church worship band and, on occasions, a cover band, at first using a powered Yamaha PA speaker and latterly with a Trademark 30 which I think gives a warmer tone.

So now I'm thinking of getting a DT25. But it still leaves the problem of getting good acoustic sounds through the DT25 - they clearly won't be as good as through a PA-type speaker. Which means some sort of work-around, another full-frequency amp/speakers etc. etc. I know I could go for something like an L2t, but then you don't get the valve sound.

My idea of a REAL Dream Rig would be for Line 6 to make a DTA (A for acoustic) - their version of a Rivera Sedona Lite. It would have a tweeter that would be switchable to give that full frequency response - matched to a Variax and POD HD500 you would have for me the ultimate, portable rig. Can you imagine, Variax in a gig bag in one hand, HD500 in its carry case over the shoulder, DT amp in the other hand... Oh, and while I'm at it, make a 10 watt version of the DTA (I don't really need 25 tube watts...).

Come on, Line 6, there must be a market for this - so many people on these forums seem to spend ages working on how to get both acoustic and electric sounds going at once - especially with a tube amp like the DT25/50. I'd consider selling a kidney to have a rig like that...

L2t. A few people use that for acoustic. Bada-bing! you're in!

Thanks for your post. I have access to 2 powered monitors, a mini-PA an acoustic amp and a keyboard amp if I want a full frequency solution. But I'm really looking for a tube amp with a tweeter so the 2 solutions would be in one box. Like a Rivera Sedona Lite. From Line 6... For me, the Dream Rig is missing this, and the Variax acoustic sounds don't work really through a DT amp (hence all the workarounds that exist).

Regarding the acoustic tones, I had some free time and the house to myself yesterday, so I was finally able to update the JTV from 1.7 to 2.0, and I was also able to mess with testing out the acoustic patches going JTV>HD500>L6Link>DT25.

I want to try another idea that I had, but I can say that for the most part, a patch idea which another user (radatats) suggested does seem to work reasonably well.

The basic concept is build a patch with a pre model, but then set up the amp signal chain as dual. Mute the amp pre model. In the other amp slot leave it as no amp. Apparently this bypasses all preamp functions while still allowing signal to be routed through the L6Link to the DT power amp.

From what I can tell, when using this patch the channel volume on the DT and POD no longer impact the volume, and the tone stacks do nothing - which is what you want to accomplish.

He suggested some ideas like an EQ set to roll off some of the bass freq and boost the treble slightly, this also helps. And adjust other FX like compressor, reverb, delay to personal taste.

I did some recordings, I will need to go back and listen to see what they sound like, I did some using the HD as a soundcard, and some others using the XLR out to a standalone recorded, with mics in front of the DT.

Overall, I think the issues with the acoustics have more to do with setting the models up properly for your playing style, and in all likely hood adjusting your playing style. You have to be more subtle using a Variax, pretty much across the board on all the models, electric or not, but in particular it's worth making note of the difference in what they are modelling with the electrics which model pickups plugged direct, vs the acoustics which model the sound of an acoustic guitar with a mic in front of it - a very different overall thing.

My second idea for acoustic patches with an HD>DT25 type rig I haven't tested yet. Hopefully soon, but this week is looking pretty jammed up.

Basically, my other thought process entailed using the FX loop send from the HD and the return on the DT. The primary concept would be to send the signal out to the DT before any preamp models occur, essentially feeding the DT poweramp with a 1/4" acoustic model + fx signal. It's not ideal, since it involves additional A/D and/or D/A conversions.

I also wonder, what happens when you start switching around the combo power amp mode, vs studio/direct - since this setting cannot be saved per patch, it could get quite tiresome to have to switch that mode manually while in a gig situation.

Thanks for your comprehensive reply - I'll try your idea using my POD and see what happens! I'm still of the opinion that an amp voiced for electric guitar never really sounds that great using an acoustic guitar - hence my 'Dream Rig' of two amps in one, or at least a switchable tweeter in a DT-style amp. I can't afford a Rivera Sedona (and anyway, by the look of the specs they're too big and heavy for my purposes).

So the quest continues...

Thanks for the feedback!  Just to clarify, the way I have it set up totally bypasses the amp in channel A and sends the clean acoustic signal to the DT power amp with just your effects.  It does the same thing as your FX loop idea but keeps you using the L6 link.  As for changing POD output, unfortunately if the DT is connected with L6 link and turned on, there is no way to change the default POD output setting.

Here is a link to a set list with a couple of variations of this concept... try it out and give me some feedback if you like the idea or not...
