Searching For Tones

So, where's the link inside the app that allows you to see a list of uploaded tones that you can pick and choose from?  What I'm seeing is, you have to know what you are looking for (and then enter it properly) in a search and "maybe" you'll get something.

I feel like L6 has made it intentionally more difficult to download tones to this amp.  I find the app frustratingly lacking in features, with the "tone search" being the worst part.  Why is my music library the most important thing in the app?  If I wanted to stream music to the amp then yeah, I'll look through the library but having to search for tones based on whats in my itunes library is WEAK.

I'd like to see an L6 employee who is knowledgeable in this area please tell me that the app will be updated SOON, and that the counter-intuitive search will be changed to something as simple as searching for tones for my pod used to be.  If it's not going to change I'll be returning the amp, cause there's no way I'm staying with the current dumbed down app.  Whenever I open that app and my music library pops up first thing it makes me want to punch something.

This app could be SO much better...please change it asap.  Something that's as simple to use as Customtone would be great.

I'm with you, the search feature is essentially broken.

I'm certain the app will be updated as well as other missing features, but these things take time.  If you think about it, Battlefied 4 is still broken and that game has been out for almost 6 months....multi-miliion dollar company can't fix a freaking computer game....I certainly hope Line 6 is getting everything in order to support this product.  Yes, it's a $60 game vs. a $500 amp, but these are the times we live in, eh?

They made it easy to match tones to a song, they did NOT make it easy to use manually. Why folks expect it to work to their set of expectations vs what the thing is designed to do is beyond me.

You wanna sound like the guitar on Whole Lotta Love? cake. You wanna make a tone and then use it for multiple songs easily? not cake.  You wanna search ALL available tones? Not cake either. You can however, go to the web, look at the Pod Farm tones, and check them out that way. There is no easy way I know of for browsing, searching etc the actual full tone library in the app.

Why folks expect it to work to their set of expectations vs what the thing is designed to do is beyond me.  My expectations are to be able to search all available tones without having to do a search for song titles.  If it could be done for every other device L6 made, it makes no sense to leave out that feature with this app.  I'm not asking for anything more than this amp is already capable of doing...it's just a matter of altering the app.

There is no easy way I know of for browsing, searching etc the actual full tone library in the app.  And I see that as a problem that needs to be corrected.  There should be a "View Library" link in the Tools section where you can go in and browse whatever is in there.   Then if you see something you might be interested in, you could click "Add to Favorites" and add it to your favorites.  Then you can transfer those tones out of your favorites into the amp when you feel like it.  I'm not asking for anything that shouldn't have already been done.  The lack of this feature dumbs the whole thing down.

Also, you shouldn't have to log into the app unless you are accessing something online.  And stop making my music library pop up every time I log in...You should see editing tools first thing, not your own music library.  It's totally annoying.

So they come up with a cool new way to match tones, and  "everyone" wants to go back to the old way....... That's really all it is. You want to use the product efficiently, use it for what it is, not what you wish it to be. That's really all I am saying. They even gave us a new forum for letting them know our ideas for future releases. what they didn't do  is continue along the same path as their other products. This is quite a product, and within a year our tones are gonna be awesome. Wait and see....and then buy...

So, blindly searching song titles is the most efficient way for me to search for tones rather than seeing them in a list from A to Z within the app?  You have this app that "could" search tones in several ways, but they left it so I have to actually dig via a search for something that might be "close" to what I'm looking for.  If the app "already knows it" then what's the harm in having the app SHOW the list?  Then pick the tone, send it do favorites and pop it into the amp when you feel like it.

I want to use the product efficiently.  That's why I'm wondering why finding tones has been made more difficult than it has been for previous products.  Why not have it both ways...match tones OR search a list?  Oh wait, I'm wishing and apparently that's a no-no.  Wait a year, then buy?  Why?

Also, I can't play music through the amp from within the AMPLIFi app.  I can only play music if I'm in iTunes itself, and even then it cuts out constantly (and that's with my iPad about 5 feet from the amp).  It's ironic that my music library is the first thing that pops up when I open the app, yet I can't use it.  I'll keep trying to figure it out, since there's no manual.  I will say that it sounds pretty good when it's working.  Could use some eq, and maybe that's possible somehow but since I can't play music from within the app....who knows...

** Being able to EQ the backing tracks would be a great feature to add to the AMPLIFI app (I'm assuming there's no way to do it... Is this a correct assumption?).  Hopefully it's in the works and is a planned feature for a future release!

X220 also said... "You have this app that "could" search tones in several ways..."

** I'm all for having more options for searching--and publishing--tones opposed to having just the one "Tone Match" way. Hopefully this too is in the works and slated for a future release!

Btw: I like the amp a lot and would buy it again if it were stolen... Having said that, I am looking forward to Line 6 providing the necessary and needed refinements to the amp's firmware, app, and Tone Match server.

I'm not sure why you're having this problem. I wish I could help.  Just wondering... are you up to date on your ipad and using IOS7?

I guess I'm just a stick in the mud. I would rather figure out how it was MEANT to be used before coming up with 100 other ways.

In the mornings, I start up the app, but then go startup Music(iPad mini), and stream from there not the app, if I just want to stream music. The bluetooth seems to have about a 10-15 foot maximum range, line of sight.

When inside the app with a song selected, do you select one of the tones you see? Do you then go to the edit screen to make adjustments? Is the guitar/music volume knob's white guitar setting turned up at all?

I understand the logic with searching for tones based on the song you call up but what I find frustrating is this example:  Lets say I want to play "Eruption" (Van Halen) . I load the song and the app brings back a dozen possible tones. However the best tone which is the Line 6 tone that they have in the Spyder amps or PODs is not there! Why?  Why don't they have their proprietary tones in the databank?

Just to be clear, I can only locate and downloads tones for songs that are in my iTunes library on my iOS device... Is this correct? So for example, if I don't have the song, "Southbound Again" by Knopfler in my iTunes library then I can't get a ToneMatch result and-or download the tone "Southbound Again" even if the tone does in fact exist in the ToneMatch server's database. This is how I understand it to be... Is this correct?

This question came up before and Phil M provided a great answer: You can manually search for a tone by song or artist name in the app. If you're in the song library part of the app, hit the "Playing" icon on the upper right hand corner of the screen, and there's a field that says "Search Tone Cloud". (Note: Sometimes you have to finger-stroke down on the tones found to get to the "Search Tone Cloud" field)

By doing this, you can actually find a tone-match for 'Southbound Again' -- I just did and I don't have the song on my iPhone. AE

There should be a "View Library" link in the Tools section where you can go in and browse whatever is in there.

a simple fix Line 6

Completely agree. They need a dedicated link that goes right to "Search Cloud" and "View Library"

Yes... I created and published that tone but then when I tried to search for it the search function couldn't find it. Maybe there's a lag time before it becomes a searchable tone?

Searching for--and finding--tones on the server really has been a hit or miss proposition for me -- hopefully in time it'll get better. Fortunately, I have a good 10 or so tones that I really like so...

Haha that's funny! No wonder I found the tone!

I had the same thing happen to me on some of the tones I published -- lag time before I could find them.  I would think, however, if I can find it, you too should be able to find it now.  Make sure your BT connection is happening when you look or it will show up as "no tones found" in the Search Tone Cloud.

I am experiencing the same frustration described by many regarding the surprising limitations in basic functions associated with searching or scrolling the list of tones and saving tones to favorites. These are basic functions one would not expect to be absent; I hope Line 6 upgrades the app soon.

That is not how they designed the unit. It was to break away from the incessant tone searches. Appreciate the beauty of getting close by choosing a song, refining what returns, and sending it on for someone else to do the same until we all have "perfectly" tweaked patches.Kinda like wanting your iPhone to work like a Blackberry.

To me the design appears to be centred squarely on playing along to music that you have on your iPhone, iPod or iPad. When you take that into consideration the design seems to make sense. If the intention were to build your music library around existing tones, then certainly, I'd be wanting to see all the existing tones and add the songs to my music library.

I have switched off the auto load option and I have told the app not to show tones that don't match the songs in my music library. I would like to see the option to have it load matching tones from My Tones without auto loading from the cloud though. When I build a tone, I'd prefer to have that one as my "go to" for a particular song rather than something that someone else has built.

Cheers,

Crusty

For what it's worth, while jamming here's what I do to get back to My Tones from Now Playing with one touch.

OPERATING TIP:

-- After loading your song to "Now Playing", tap four times on the upper left corner backtracking the pages from "Song" / "Playlists"/ Main Page / to "My Tones". Select your tone then tap on the "Playing" in the upper right hand corner. You will be back at your "Now Playing" page with "My Tones" in the upper left hand corner.  By setting your playback features this way, you can play your song and change tones with a simple one step back rather than a 'full four step' process during the middle of your jam.   AE

I just picked up the 150 yesterday and I have to agree that finding tones can be a bit of a pain. I have been playing for 35 years and I bought this amp because I really like the idea of being able to dial in my sound from 30 feet out before recording. The amp sounds fantastic however it would be nice to have a full list of all tones created. This is much easier than trying to think of a tone. I really don't care about jamming with my ITunes library because I have been writing songs for almost as long and just want quick access to various rigs. There should be a search tones field on the sidebar menu as well as an ability to pull a list of all tones?

I'm wondering if just adding a 'factory' tag to some set of existing well designed and diverse set of tones could give the people who want to work their way through a set of high quality factory tone presets what they want. This would not modify anything in the existing app.

Song search would totally work the same as it does now. But if you enter the appropriate keyword then you get a set of factory tone presets as the return that you can then work your way through.

I think all it would take is someone who works at line6 adding the appropriate keyword to the appropriate set of pre-existing published tones.

Song search now is already sensitive to whatever keywords are in the published tone info page. I tend to use artist name or musical genre as opposed to a specific song name, and that seems to work fine if the tone was tagged with that info. So by just adding the appropriate factory tag, everyone who wants a nice set of factory presets would actually get that and would stop complaining.

Personally, i'd also like to see more musical genre specific keyword tags in the published tones.

I'd also love to be able to use that keyword info that is in the presets when doing searches in My Tones. Right now it appears that searching in MyTones only works on the name of the tone, and not the tone's info keyword tags like song search does. If it also worked on the keyword info, then you could use specific keywords in your custom tones as a way to organize them for easy access.
