Line Inputs Recordings Failed Since 1.10 Update

Recommended Posts

Well... I'm confused now.  Yes, it's a user forum... but there are Line 6 personnel on here... helpfully answering questions.  (and someone mentioned that the project manager monitors this section).  It would be nice if the answers to these recording issues were posted here (would make sense for the company as well... because there must be lots of prospective purchasers looking at these pages).

specifically, line6 support do not monitor the forums, if you have a support issue, then contacting support is the most likely option to help yourself out....

you can in turn come here and share what you learn...

the project manager's do monitor this forum... but if they see it as a support issue, they may not reply and would surely want you to get the support you need through the proper support channels.

The only issues with recorded files that are reported to us are the two in this thread. We are trying to find out what exactly is happening here.

Anything you can tell yet? Little inside, trick or tip?

I'm really sure you guys are trying your best to solve this for good ASAP.

But I have work always coming up and any little tip would help

I know that I must be doing things differently because computers are not random and sometimes I can record without problems and others I can't.

I've already received a nice tip, from one of you at line6,  regarding my video.

I now know that "quick capture" does not record the aux-in and if I try to use it before recording to the  SD it will not record the aux-in on the SD card as well.

That's a nice bit of info to have! Thanks

Any more info of this kind?  B)

Success.  We were able to make a recording tonight of both the Main Outputs and the Line Inputs.

We tried a bunch of things, including deleting folders on the PC, re-formatting the SD card, and nothing helped.   The SD card wasn't being recognized by the M20d.

The fix for us was to create a brand new Setup from scratch.  I then added all of the instruments and microphones to the Stage again, did the usual auto trim.  After we did this, the SD card was recognized, and the recording was successful.

I have updated my support ticket with the steps that i went through.  Maybe someone smarter than me will chime and tell us what's going on.  All I can suggest is to try creating a new setup from scratch, if you are having problems with the M20d recognizing your SD card, or if your recordings are not working correctly.

can this have any thing to do with setups created before or after the firmware update?

I also had 2 successful recordings.

I know for sure these were done on new setups done recently, so they were not created for that session but were created on 1.10 firmware.

I can't really remember with setups were done before the update...  So I don't know if my failed recordings were done on setups reloaded from a back up from the previous firmware.

I have found that the M20d is in fact glitchy trying to get it to recognize SD cards.  Some cards that have worked perfectly in the past will not immediately be recognized on the next boot up.  This is quite annoying, but with some tweaking, usually just trying to create a new folder or going to different folder levels on the card will bring it back online.   It could also be that Davec69 has essentially accomplished the same thing by creating a new setup.  I think acutally when I have back out of the folder levels to until I am just looking at the card itself on the M20d (if there is a USB also plugged in, this would be the level where you would choose which card you want to record on, so you would see both cards).  At least that is what I did last time.  I will be more careful about the steps I take next time it happens, it's just that when you are at the gig you're just frantically trying everything to get it to work.

Hi there,

I also have a problem recording the line outputs on my new m20d. I have some files on the sd card (all with "normal" size for a recording), but the line input wave file are silent.

I then had put also the main mix to the recording and this worked out, but it was too silent. It`s just not as loud as it was through our PA.

Any hints?

Are you using the setup the recording was created with? If not please make sure that input channels are created on the stage according to the recording files (1_Kick to channel one, 8_Voc to channel 8 etc.) and that the recording folder is located in the file browser on the recording page (no question mark in the left upper corner (select session)

Those are some good points ArneLine6  the question mark in the upper right corner is what I see sometimes when I can't get the M20d to recognize my SD card.  Sometimes with a little fiddling I can get it to come back online.  IT doesn't seem very robust though I am using the class 10 cards and FAT format.  And sometimes when I start a session with a card that was working perfectly the last time I used the M20d the next time I turn the M20d on it won't recognize the card and I have to fiddle around a bit going in and out of folder levels just to get it to recognize the card.  Then it works.  If there was a way to make this a little more robust in the future that would be awesome.

The other suggestion is one that I never thought of but makes sense, if you have all the recorded files but are now on a different setup you may not have the tracks set up for the files to play through.  Just the way the M20d works is until you drag some channels onto the stage you have nothing.

Mh, I got my m20d just a few days ago and on thursday I have only created one setup for the band rehearsal, so there no multiple setups yet. I put in all Inputs as well as the xlr outputs for our PA. I then inserted the sd card.

As I said, I got files for each track, with a plausible size (e.g. a recording for one track for a song was was round about 44MB), but the files itself seem to be empty. The main signal recording was working, but with a very weak signal. But the signals for each channel were ok from the display of the m20d in perform and setup mode as well as on our PA it was loud enough.

This was the same problems that I had, and the reason I started this thread.   I could not save my blank line input tracks.  It looks like they just did not record.

To resolve the issue, I had to create a new setup from scratch and re-record.

One thing that I mentioned to support was that I noticed the folders on my SD card were marked as "Read Only".  I don't know if this had anything to do with the problem.

If you have waveforms displaying on the line input tracks in youer DAW, then you should have good recordings.

In my case, I had an SD card full of 800mb line input tracks, but there was no waveform display in my DAW, just flat line.  When I tried normalizing the tracks, it just boosted the noise floor as hiss.

Hi,

Just came to report the I've been following the tips and advice given here on the forum:

Format the SD card,

create and save new setup/scene

stop/start recording carefully

etc...

And every thing as been working. I've done quite a few successful recordings since then.

I don't have the time to do proper tests and try one thing at a time. I just followed all the advice at once.

So I don't know the real cause or what I as doing wrong before.

Thanks for all the help.

I can't remember if I mentioned this previously, or if it even matters, but one thing to watch out for if you create a folder or folder structure on your SD card, using your PC, instead of in the M20D.  When I did this, the folders created on my PC were marked "Read Only", when I right clicked on them and went to properties, in Windows 7.  Maybe these folders would not be writable on the M20D?

One other suggestion. When you are working with your SD card on the M20D.  Always make sure the you use the back arrow, to back all the way out to the root of the SD card, before creating a new folder for a project.

I was having a hard time creating a new project folder for recording, until I realized that I was already inside a previously created folder, and inside another folder in that folder.   A better view of the folder tree would help a lot when creating folders for recordings,  maybe even showing the setup name for which that folder was created.

I don't even want to imagine what would happen if you try to create a new project folder for setup 1 for example, inside a folder which was created with a different setup 2 for example.

Nothing new to add to this yet, but I just wanted to add myself to the list of people having this issue.  I wasted a lot of time last night (first time using the M20 with the full PA setup), before giving up in frustration.

I hope the L6 SW guys are working hard on finding a fix for this!  I'll try some of the suggestions in this thread when I get a chance, and will report back...

Okay, I've just had another try.  Not looking good....

I created a new setup with just one acoustic guitar going direct to input 13.  Same problem.  I tried creating a new folder on the SD card, and I also tried recording to a USB hard drive.  It was recognised, and I could create a folder there too, but had the same problem with blank recorded files.

So, it seems this isn't specific to SD cards - any external storage media seems to have the same issue.

Quick Capture works flawlessly with the same settings, so I know it's not user error...

When you play back on the M20d make sure that you are using the setup you made the recording with or that you have input channels on stage that correspond to the recording. For example if you recorded a channel assigned to input 13 there needs to be an input channel assigned to input 13. Also please make sure that you have the option "record inputs" or "record inputs and main mix" active.

If you take the SD card out or change it or if you change the setup you need to open the correct folder on the SD card using the menu in the upper left corner. If there is a question mark the recording path is not correct.

When the card is pulled out without pressing the stop button the files can be corrupted and seem "empty."

Hi Arne

I'm trying to replay the recordings as soon as they've been created.  So, nothing has changed in the setup between recording and playback.  I always use "record inputs and main mix".

The recording path is correct, and I've not disconnected anything prior to pressing stop.

In short, I've done everything according to the instructions.  It simply isn't working

So,

today we did a complete band session and tried to record again. And surprise: Recording was working very well. For all lines and main mix. My fault was that I didn´t crank up the master volume of the M20d to 0 dB last time we tried. We just had our active speakers turned up. So, we reduced volume of the speakers and turned the master volume up on the M20d.

The tip with navigating to the root of the SD card was superb. First it didn´t recognize the SD card, but was fine when I navigated to the root of the file explorer on the M20d and then clicked on the SD card.

This is really becoming a problem. I hope someone at Line 6 is working on this problem. If we at least know what's causing the problem, we can avoid doing that.

After several successful attempts at recording, (we though we had solved the problem) we got a bunch of blank files again last night. Our M20D is setup in our rehearsal space. Same as last time. No changes. This time.....nothing, just 16 blank 843mb audio files.

I started the recording by going to the root of the SD card and creating a new folder, which worked previously. Not this time.

Fortunately our drummer has become leery of relying on the M20D for recording, and setup his little Zoom handheld recorder beside it. If it wasn't for that, we would have been screwed. We have an important gig coming up and everyone is cramming to learn the new tunes that we added. These rehearsal recordings really help in between band get together s.

What's going on with this thing?

The recording was definitely stopped.

We even tried listening back to it a couple times after rehearsal, and heard nothing.  We didn't record the Main Outs, only the Line Inputs this time, so I was hoping that was why we were not hearing anything.

Tonight, I got around to importing the tracks into my DAW, and sure enough, they are all blank.  I even tried importing individual tracks into Sound Forge.  They are all just flat line.

If shutting down prematurely is a problem, maybe you guys can incorporate a 10 or 15 second shutdown delay countdown timer upon Power Off.  With a flashing message that reads "Please Make Sure You Stopped Your Recording"   this will at least give people time to turn the power switch back on and it stop their recording before they lose it.

If there are files with a size that seems right but a computer does not play the files this looks like the file could not be completed because the card was pulled out or the mixer was powered off before stopping the recording.

Sadly, our M20D again provided us with some very large 1gb blank tracks after our rehearsal last night.  This time, we triple checked everything.  Then triple checked that the recording was stopped after the recording.  Still nothing.  Just 16 blank tracks.

We've given into the fact that the recording feature on the M20D is broken, so we always have another recorder running alongside it now.  Hopefully, Line 6 will fix the problems.

Maybe while they're at it, they can add some metering to the recording process.  The recording interface leaves much to be desired. The square blocks with barely discernible green flashing lights say's nothing about what's going on with the recording.

We put in another support ticket last night.  Nothing yet.

I think one issue might be the way the SD card sits in the slot.  There is a spring mechanism but it doesn't lock the card in place.  In other words you don't need to push down on the card again to get the card out  of the slot, you can just lift it out.  So conceivably the card could lift from being seated properly just from vibrations.  Which would be the same as lifting the card out before the recording is stopped.  I've been lucky so far with my recordings, and I haven't tried recording to a usb drive. so i don't know if it's any more robust than the SD card.

Just wanted to weigh in on this thread with my $.02

I've also experienced the blank wave file issue, but the next time I recorded rehearsal I created a new setup and all of my Mic and Line inputs recorded as expected, except once when only a single track turned out blank. So -- I have no idea what is causing this issue for me, it seems to happen intermittently, but it hasn't occurred for a while.

I'm now having an equally painful issue with recording -- within about 45 seconds of starting to record, I receive an error message saying that the SD card couldn't keep up and the recoding is aborted!  This is with a brand new, Samsung Class 10 card that recorded the same number of tracks in the past.  I'm recording 9 Mic Inputs and 3 Line inputs when this occurs.  Frustrating to say the least.  I will try recording directly to PC via USB next week and see how it goes.

I too think that the SD card slot is too "flimsy", I could easily imagine it vibrating in and out of contact while recording.

I'll be trying my first recording tonight. So far tests have shown it to be working, I get audio in the SD card files no problem..

Hello,

This is Marcel.Do u have a free time for me a bit please?I  have a Line6 Stagescape mixer since the last month.I tried to record some performings on it.After that I moved the USB stick on my pc,just to hear my work and ,surprinsingly,I found a very low signal on all the recorded tracks. One friend told me that there is a soft on www.line6.com  that I have to install on my pc in order to lance my line6 mix capture into that to solve my issues.Do you know  anything about that ? Thank you a lot for reading my message and waiting for your replay.

Hello Marcel,

Are you running the auto trim feature on the M20D before you record?

The recording levels on the M20D are set by the trim (gain) settings on each channel.  It does not matter where you set the volume level on the channel.  The volume for each channel comes after all the other settings on the channel.  The volume coming out of the main speakers can even be off and you should still get good levels going to the recording.

If you've ever looked at the channel from a regular analog mixer from top to bottom, they look similar to this:

Input

Gain (Autotrim location on the M20D)

Insert

Pad

EQ

Aux Send

FX

Routing

Pan

Volume (Sets the volume coming out of the mains)

There are many variations depending on the mixer, but most are similar.

Notice that the gain is at the top.   This is where you set the recording level (trim) on the M20D.  The channel volume is at the bottom which happens after the gain is set.

In our band, I run the Autotrim on every channel prior to a recording.  This sets the highest recording for each channel.

FYI. When running the auto trim, make sure each person is playing at their normal stage volume.  I had a nasty experience at our last gig.  I asked our bass player to play something so I could run autotrim.  He did, but he had his amp set at a very low volume.  Auto trim promptly cranked up the gain so his amp had a nice signal coming in.  Then when the show started, the bass player cranked up his amp to the normal stage volume, and we had insant  "In a Gadda Da Vida" fuzz going on.  The moral.  Make sure everyone autotrims at their regular stage volume.  This can also happen in reverse, when the autotrim is set at a high level, then someone turns down their amp or instrument.  The auto tracking should catch minor changes.

I have the latest software and recorded two sets last night.  The first one recorded fine but the second was entirely blank...each file had a mb value but no sound.   In between sets I stopped the recording and then pressed record again at the start of the second set.   The second set was automatically placed in its own folder but no sound.
