Having A Hard Time Connecting To Pro Tools

I saw on Line 6's site that any pro tools version prior to pro tools 8.05 or earlier requires the use of a proprietary interface with their software and that basically POD HD devices can't be hooked up to pro tools via usb in these situations.

I have pro tools MP 9 (version 9.0.5), and it seems to only boot up if I have my M-Audio MobilePre connected. Also, I can't seem to get it to recognize the Line 6 POD HD500x at all.

Am I falling into this same boat where I can't hook up my POD via usb to pro tools? Or am I failing to do something here?

If I can't hook up via usb does that mean I have to go through the M-Audio MobilePre? How do I do that? Will I be losing something in sound quality?

Thanks! I'm very new to all this so I appreciate the help.

I think I found my answer...

A "qualified" M-Audio hardware is all I can use as an interface with pro tools MP

So, I don't think I can plug my POD directly into my computer through USB and have it recognized as an interface in pro tools MP. However, is there anyway I can run it through my M-Audio MobilePre?

You are correct, given the interface and software you have PT will not recognize as an audio interface. I would send the pair of XLR outputs or 1/4" unbalanced outputs from the 500x to an open pair of inputs on your recording interface. The Mobile pre should have a Direct monitoring button on the interface, I would recommend using that when you are tracking to PT. Just make sure your tracks in PT are mute and you are listening from the inputs at the interface, that way there is no significant input latency.

I see you have posted in a couple different forums lately Joe. It's nice to see a Line 6 presence on the boards besides in the Live sound forum, which has quite a few posts by L6 employees. Thanks for popping in!

Really appreciate the response Joe! I was super bummed I wasn't getting this to work, so I'm grateful for the guidance here. Does this mean I'll be recording two separate tracks then (L and R)? Or does it combine the two signals somehow? (Maybe that depends on how I input it though)?

Below is a picture of the mobilepre

If I input the xlr's in the front it seems like I'd be getting two tracks (since two different channels), no? If I input them in the line ins in the back maybe I'd get a single signal and track? Not sure how that works I guess...

Would the xlr's be recommended over the unbalanced outputs? If so, does the xlr to 1/4 make the most sense in this case to go from the pod to the rear inputs of the mobilepre?

Sorry for so many questions, I just obviously have no clue what I'm doing here...ha
