Anyway To Hold Variax Model After Hd500 Changes It

Recommended Posts

Is there anyway to have the Variax model that is selected within a HD500 preset stay persistent while using the 3-way selector?  I would like a preset to change lets say to the Lester 1.  Then while playing I might want to change the pickup say bridge pickup or neck pickup and what not.
Whenever this is done it will change the model to whatever is on the selector knob and not the one within the preset.

For a brief while my JTV59 exhibited the behaviour you describe - ie: the HD500 changed the model, then the JTV remained in the same bank and using the pickup selector switch selected models within that bank - BUT then it mysteriously went back to the previous normal behaviour where the MODEL control knob on the JTV was what controlled which bank the pickup selector was choosing models from.   I can't remember exactly when it changed but I seem to recall that it was after a firmware update ( I think moving to 1.9 or 2.0) - I was having to reflash a few times due to flakey update issues and it definitely changed behaviour during one of those.  I am sure I posted about it in one of the threads on the forum and I am sure there were other people who had exactly the same issues who also commented in that and other threads.

HOWEVER, all of us discovered that the behaviour went back to the pickup selector using the MODEL selector chosen bank as it's reference and NOT what was forced from the HD500.   We never got to the bottom of it - so don't understand why it changed and then changed back.

There is a LOCK and UNLOCK setting for the JTV on the HD500 to allow you to control whether the JTV control knobs will affect a forced model if you adjust them - I have not experimented with that setting and I was wondering whether that may also have an affect on whether the JTV MODEL knob setting is recognised or not.  It may be worth trying that to see if it makes any difference, but I seem to recall from the earlier threads that we did check out that setting and it didn't help out - but your mileage may vary.

If u want to change model-PUs during playing, u cld implement it via defferent presets on the HD500.

As far as the LOCK setting is concerned, u cld use it in a situation where both signals (ie Variax AND Variax mags) are fed in2 the HD500. In this case the switch+tone effects only the mag sound and not the model sound.

Abstract from "POD HD500 Edit Pilot's Guide v2.0 - English ( Rev A )" page 4-2:

*Note: For the Magnetic output mode of the JTV guitar, only the Volume knob Lock functionally “locks
out†the local volume control. The Tone knob and Pickup selector switch will always function locally for the
Magnetic output, regardless of these Local Control - “locked†settings
.

Hmm, maybe I should try an older firmware.  I rolled back to 1.9, but probably going back to 2.0 as the old workbench is a pain and the HD version so much better.   I was looking at the lock settings, but the only one that supports the model selector includes a lock on the volume tone as well.  Definitely don't want that.

That manual quote is a little confusing... I guess that means you can select the Mag pickups always when you lock it, but that still won't let me use the model that is on the piezo's virtual pickups via the selector..    Don't want to run two cables anyway.  Or can both signals ride the VDI?

I just started building some presets on the Pod to switch the JTV.  I was hoping to have a bank with one amp setup and the 2nd switch would let me switch to the strat, then another to a tele.   But maybe I will need to get even more granular and have the presets change JTVs pickup setup as well.  Kind of a bummer, but could definitely start eating up some presets.

Yes - both signals ride the VDI. In other words, using just the VDI connection from your JTV you can select Input1=Variax and Input2=Variax Mags in any Pod HD preset.

Yes, mag output will go through the VDI...no need for 2 cables.

This is what happens anyway. If you're using the bridge of the Strat model, and you save the preset, the next time you come back to it, it'll be using the same model and pickup. The only way around that is to change the settings under Variax model to "Don't Force". Then whatever model is selected on the knob is what you'll get. This can lead to some very unpleasant sounding accidents though, lol...I like the Pod to control everything, then I don't have to think as much.
