Can't Get Workbench To Work On Mac

Hi there,

I got my dream rig today and have installed workbench plus it asked me to install Java.

I have also noticed with the USB interface the end going to the computer has a green light on and the other end is red. If I change USB ports the guitar end of the interface goes green for a moment and then goes back to red.

i think the latest version may be the problem... workbench wants either 1.6 or 1.5 and the latest 1.7 may not work.

in any case jandrio is correct... the issue is getting the right version of java on your mac.

with mac being a closed system it's hard to get a version other than what apple wants you to have.

you might need to try some apple forums for that... although its possible someone here ran into the same issue and can help you.... just might not be as quick.

That's not true anymore.  Apple pulled that since Java was getting so many security hits regularly and was making them behind everyone.   You can download the latest Java for OSX right from their site.

http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Going by his output he is runing 1.6 update 65.  So you can update to Java 7 (1.7) and see if that helps.  I have a feeling it won't.  I have heard people had issues with the older workbench and Mavericks.   It works for me, but I didn't do much with the old Workbench before upgrading.

Also, since you just got the guitar you may want to look at using Workbench HD and upgrade the JTV to 2.0.  You will need to use the included interface when making guitar presets and if you use a Pod you can't program the JTV through it.  That fix should be any day...   I kid... I kid...

Anyway, Workbench HD is miles ahead of the old workbench.

I hadn't really noticed if they separated java from the other apple updates.

used to be alot of terminal interaction to rig a different version of Java into the mix.

I do love the fact that workbench HD doesn't use java anymore...

i assumed that the OP had a gen 1 variax though, meaning HD probably wasn't even an option.

Yeah they did that during later stages of Lion or Mountain Lion I think.  A big security vulnerability (big surprise) came up with Java and shortly after they directed everyone to update via java.com.  Apple used to provide their own version built off of the released code, so there were always delays with fixes.  Apple is just BSD under the covers, just a matter of creating the proper links.

Apple is closed, until you open the hood ;)

that's closed enough for most people... i hate having to do basic stuff via command line.

i have to say separating java was a smart move, since it's not needed for most things.

Ok thanks for the advice so far. I have upgraded to Workbench HD and it now opens.

When it does in the top left corner it says nothing is connected. As mentioned before my USB interface has a green light at the end going to the computer and a flashing red light at the guitar end. If I disconnect the USB from the back of the computer it goes green for a moment and then back to flashing red.

Is this faulty?

the variax interface does not power the variax like the pod does.

its just to save battery life with nothing plugged in it turns off.

but you may want that 1/4" plugged in (to an amp) so you can hear the models you are creating...

the workbench interface does not pass audio either!

That is it. Thank you to all problem now solved.

I do have to say it does seem a bit daft to me that you have to have a 1/4" cable plugged in for no real reason.

Also make sure NOT to turn ur volume level at 0, cause it forces the JTV in2 sleep mode...

Abstract from Variax Reflash and Software Update Instructions

On a James Tyler Variax guitar, ensure that the Volume knob on the guitar is NOT set to the '0' position as it will put the guitar into Power Save Mode. Make sure that the Volume knob is set higher than 0 when updating or editing the JTV guitar.

That is good to know.  I didn't realize that.  I wonder if I did that on one 2.0 firmware update.  It failed in the middle.  I figured it was just a typical issue as I have read others have had problems.  But maybe it was that.

It updated after I tried again, but not sure if volume was at 0 or if I changed it.
