Firmware 1.05 Update For L3t Is An Absolute Must! (for All Stagesource Speakers)

Recommended Posts

I just bought a L3T to use as a variax dream rig a few days ago, I thought it sounded good but not great. then I found out I had an old firmware version on it 1.03, then, I found out that I had to have M20d in order to update the firmware. I did not see any of them in stock at any of the guitar centers within hundreds of miles of me. My plan was to ask if they would let me bring the speaker in and get the firmware updated so that I don't have to spend $2000 on a piece of equipment that I don't need.

I went to my local guitar Center yesterday to check out a guitar that they had in stock, while I was there I let them know that I wasn't happy about the speaker and that they would most likely be getting it back. One of the sales people there did some looking around and found one that showed in stock but no one knew where it was. the m20d box had accidentally been put inside of a Roland shipping box, long story short, they sold me the brand-new m20d for 1500.00 instead of 1900.

They let me know that I can return it without any penalty, keep it, or sell it on craigslist or eBay. So I thought maybe somebody on craigslist would like a good deal so I posted it there, if no one shows any interest in a day or two I'll just take it back to guitar center.

I did the firmware upgrade and now the l3t sounds absolutely incredible! If you're still on the old firmware version with these speakers I encourage you to update it anyway you can the difference is astounding!

Are you serious?  I actually considered getting an L series speaker but have absolutely no need for the M20d.  So if I did get one I can't get firmware updates?  That is so bogus, I just took them off my list.  Really hard to remain supportive of this company sometimes...

I would think that the Line 6 monkey through the pod HD 500 X Line 6 link out to this stage source speaker would be able to do the update. There is lots of companies that have a PC-based or Mac-based firmware updater and it's just a small little application, I would think there would be some way to do that with the Line 6 monkey without too much trouble, and save customers a lot of trouble. However, right now you can't even use workbench HD with a pod HD 500 X and a variax. You have to stop everything, plug your variax guitar into the USB interface, put the battery back in, and then you can use workbench HD.

I'm interested in this as well - I bought 2 L3T speakers - one from Sweetwater that had current correct firmware, and just a week ago bought one from my local Guitar Center that had the previous firmware - and I don't have an M20d (yet).I DO, however, have an HD 500x and a Variax guitar and the interface. When I asked about this before, I was told that it could only be done with the M20d.

Riley - you said the difference was "incredible" going to the new firmware - in what way?  I've got a gig coming up soon and will need to do something with this.

Thanks so much,

Larry

Larry,

Before the firmware the distortion presets had a brittle sound, and the acoustic modeling was too, which made the string noise very loud. After the firmware update it was a whole new world, distortion presets were nice and had a warmth to them and the acoustics were much better, really amazing actually.

If you're in Austin TX you can use this one to do the update. Riley :)

Wow, that is pretty weird that they require an M20d to update the L2/L3 firmware! I will check mine tonight, I have to send my M20d back to Sweetwater, it has seemingly got hardware issues, but since no one really knows, or can confirm that it is or isn't hardware vs firmware, I'll just rest easier with a new unit that works properly right out of the box (mine didn't. Touch screen didn't work or respond at all, until I did the screen calibration, and it didn't keep, the same problem came back each time I loaded it up over a few sessions, then caused major consternation at a gig where I had to reboot several times just to get the calibration to work properly!)

Thanks for the offer! I'm in Los Angeles area, though. I went to my local Guitar Center and they found an "open box" M20D for a significant discount, so I'm having them bring that in from another nearby store tomorrow. If it's in as good a shape as they say (new, just opened box), I'll likely just take it - trading in my Presonus 16.4.2... Just have to throw in a couple hundred $$$.

Been thinking about doing this anyway...

The firmware update 1.05 fixed an issue that could occur when connecting the speakers to the M20d using Line6 Link. The issue was a low level clicking sound that happened very rarely. There where no changes made to the voicing and the sound of the StageSource speakers.

Ah, well - I have a M20d on the way for tomorrow - if it's in good shape, I'll take it. As I said, I've been moving in that direction since I bought my first L3t and JTV 69. It is inevitable... no escape for me...

Another thing that's inevitable is an upgrade to the M20d, and it's getting a little late in its lifecycle. I won't feel too bad about it if it gets replaced within this year as I won't have THAT much cash in it. GC is being pretty good to me.

I have to say that EVERYTHING I've read about the M20d and Line 6 people/products makes me happy to be moving forward with this. It will be a quantum leap ahead of where I was with my Presonus 16.4.2 and Mackie 450v2 speakers.

This board and the moderators are really a major selling point as well. People may not say it enough, but thank you so much for the time you mods and Line 6 staff put into this!

I went from presonus 16.4.2 and very decent yorkville speakers, to the line 6 speakers and m20d. Things have never sounded so good, and with such little effort. I have bounced around different speakers and combinations, and always been satisfied, but often thought about what I had...and I actually did a complete circle at one point. And still wondered if I did the right move. With the line 6 gear, I haven't even thought about what I had. It is all good.

My speakers were doing this low level clicking sound; I just reinstalled the firmware on both of them last night, but as near as I could tell, the two speakers already each had 1.05 firmware installed on them. I will keep an ear out for that clicking sound to see if it comes back. I thought I was hearing things! Glad to know it's not all in my mind... Though, not great if that problem continues to occur after updating the firmware.

What model speakers are we talking about? How many speakers were connected when you hear the clicking? What brand of AES mic cables are you using for L6 link hookup?

-Speakers are L2t.

-Two of them connected.

-Using AES cables from BestTronics, the cabling is 110ohm, Belden 1800F, with Neutrik connectors.

I am going to have more time tonight to dig in a little deeper, will take a closer listen and see if doing the firmware solves the problem; I reinstalled all that firmware last night, but didn't have extended time to listen closer - though from what I did spend with them, didn't notice any clicking after updating firmware; and not 100% certain they had the most recent firmware on them anyway

thanks!

First ... All L2's have 1.05 firmware so there is no need to update any of them.

Forgot to ask ... But I'm assuming your cables are no longer than 50 feet and you don't have any cables extended ( you can't use two 25's plugged together for example). Other than that those should be very good cables assuming they are in proper working condition ( and don't believe that just because they are new that is necessarily true).

Does the clicking happen all the time and on all the speakers? I have seen problems happen if a cable gets kicked and the system tries to re-enumerate the cabinet. So if you can check and see if it just happens to the last speaker in line or if it happens to every speaker next in line after a specific box.

Well... I'm now an official M20d owner!  I had to drive an hour to pick it up from a not-so-local Guitar Center, but it was worth it - significant discount/clearance, open box but brand new, never powered on. Still had the plastic on the screen and the cord was never even plugged in. Firmware 1.0, though - so I've got some upgrading to do.

Thanks to all, especially Digital-Sound, for your advice.

This is going to be fun! Except now I have to read all the back posts so I don't ask a lot of dumb questions (like what kind of case are people using).

Thanks again!

Got the 2nd L3t updated to the current firmware, had to get another cable, but am now happily streaming from my iPad 4 via AirPlay to an Apple Airport Express and Apple USB to Ethernet adaptor with a 3.5mm cable connecting that to the M20d.

Thanks to the advice of several who posted in this forum, it took MAYBE 5 minutes to get hooked up, configured on the iPad and running. I was almost startled... Is it supposed to be that easy? And after coming from my Presonus 16.4.2 and having NO END OF GRIEF getting a laptop working with the Presonus (sorry Presonus!), this just seems like SOMEONE WAS PAYING ATTENTION WHEN THEY MADE THIS STUFF!!!!! :)
