Spider Ii 212 - Feedback Problems With Active Pups

Hi there,

I have just got a new guitar - a Charvel Desolation DC-2. This guitar comes with 2 Charvel active pickups - they have been described as being similar to EMG 81/85 pups. I play in a covers band that plays classic rock and heavy metal covers. I have a Spider 2 212 amp. Using this guitar (at band volumes) if I try to turn the gain up on the Metal and Distortion channels to anything above about half way I get deafening feedback. I appreciate the virtues of backing my gain off however I would like just a little more filth available to me for some of our heavier tracks. I've used this amp with my 1992 Washburn MG44 with very hot humbuckers (Entwistle HDN) and whilst I get feedback it isn't as problematic and allows me more gain before feedback. I should just clarify that I have switched the Noise Gate ON and this seems to have little effect. Would it be worth me considering purchasing a Noise Reducer Stomp Box t put before the amp.

Much appreciate any opinions and advice, particularly if you have experience of running very hot pups or actives through your Spider.

Cheers  :)

I have heard of some people having issues with active pickups and Spider amps - something about the signal overdriving the input circuit of the amp.  Th eone solution I have seen posted is using some type of stompbox (I think any kind will work) between the guitar and amp, which buffers the signal.
