l have for two years a POD HD500 and the last flash memory I have installed is v.2.10.
v.2.20 had not interest for me, so, I didn't installed it.
Now, Line 6 appeared with the v2.31 flash memory, including proposing the exchange of v2.20 to v.2.31.

My POD HD500 works fine with the flash memory v.2.10.
So, what I do??
I Keep the flash memory v2.10 or I exchange to v2.31??
There would be some advantage in this exchange?

There are some firmware issues that would benefit you if you were to upgrade. Look for the feedback issues thread. None of the recent upgrades (as far as I'm aware) change anything as far as the modeling goes. In other words, it won't change the sound of any of your patches. So my advice would be to go for it. If you do, it is highly recommended that you save all your patches as a bundle (batch?) file and when the upgrade program asks if you want to save your patches say no. And then reload them after the upgrade. I don't have time to go into details but some people have seemed to have issues when they've kept their patches. Look for this thread for more specifics.  Hd 500 V2.31 Update.

For me personally I am on 2.10 and have never had an issue with loud squealing sounds coming out of my gear.  It's pretty rock solid if you ask me.  I tried 2.20 and for me with in an hour of trying it, it squealed at me and I immediately went back to 2.10. There was an issue in 2.20 that I didn't like as well and both 2.20 and 2.31 still have this issue:

My issue is when or if you have your USB connected to the computer.  You are practicing with music through the USB through headphones or my amp and notice that a string is out of tune.  If the music is still playing when you go into the tuner it does not mute the in coming sounds from the USB like 2.10 does? It also makes a loud squeal when you go in and out of the tuner while playing music through the USB. Probably not a big deal for most but for me having being used to the old way is a serious pain in the ear.  I mean ear.

I agree it won't or shouldn't change the sound of your current patches. Try it at your own risk.  I am staying with something that is tested and tested my me to be a solid firmware build.  2.10!  Yes it does have issues but at least it doesn't squeal at me.

I am curious to hear if the squeal has been taken care of but until then...

this your testimony is very interesting and I think the Line6 engineers should be made aware of what you just described

Yea, I have been down the line 6 support road.  I would basically have to send in all my gear for them to replicate my issues?  I haven't talked to them about this issue specifically but I am sure they world have me send in all my gear.

I am happy.  I have a couple of line 6 products.

I am on Firmware:

HD500 - bought 10-17-2010 - FW - 2.10

JTV-89 - bought 6-30-2013 ish - FW - 1.90

I have issues with both new firmware releases for the HD series and the JTV series.  But they sound fantastic they way I have them now.  It has never let me down.  Knock on wood.

I need something that will be rock solid night in and out and not have to worry about these pesky issues that get introduced through a firmware update.

My feeling is they lost code on both firmware updates and they think everything is fine.  It's not and they won't admit it.  I am not too sure if they lost the guy who wrote 2.10 but I don't think anything was left out if I can remember. Maybe it the pressure of the take over by Yahama?  But all the new firmware is half baked and line 6 needs to know this because it's a fact.  Yes I have told them about the JTV firmware issues and that sparked Line 6 to want all my gear. But I haven't told them about the HD500 current issues.  Not too sure if I want to venture down that road again.

Like I said I am happy with what I currently use.  Just a matter of opinion.

BTW... hurghanico,   do you have my above issues or is your USB quiet when in tuner mode and playing music?  Try 2.10 and 2.31 and you will see the difference. Or maybe you won't.  let me know if you are willing to try.

I'm on 2.31 and I just tried with USB connection right now ..

using the POD as an audio interface, I connected the headset to it, and I put an audio file playing back ..

then I put the POD in tuner mode, and yet I could hear the playing back .. I played the guitar strings and I left them to vibrate freely, and tried to leave from and return to the tuner, and every time I did it, for a fraction of second I heard a loud sound, which gives me the idea that it could work as a spark for something much worse .. so i did not want to continue the experiment .. I had already that very bad squeal experience one time..

anyway thank you for pointing me much probably in the right direction to understand where it could be the real squeal problem culprit..

No problem.  I am glad I am not the only one.  :)

I play in a cover band and use the USB to practice for my weekend gigs when we have them.  The USB is totally muted in tuner mode on 2.10?  lost code maybe?

Sounds like this is reproducible and should be reported to Line 6, perhaps by you this time hurghanico. That will be evidence for Line 6 that the problem is not FrozenOzone's equipment. And also - you have a good track record in having reported bugs fixed in a firmware update!

There shouldn't be squealing in any case, but was your Tuner in Mute mode when you heard this?

I would have to flash and go up to either 2.20 or 2.31 to reproduce the issue.  I believe that no matter what you are doing when music is playing through the USB you can go in and out of the tuner while it's playing and you will get the squeal or squawk.

I don't think you need to reproduce it, FrozenOzone. hurghanico is running 2.31 and Line 6 should be able to reproduce it with that.

I will also try to reproduce it on my HD Pro running v2.20 since it seems you noticed it with this version on the HD500.

Yes, this is the firmware it was introduced. (2.20) If that helps...

Ok.. I tried again now..

both with the tuner in bypass and mute mode..

like in the previous experiment, a file was playing back..

I went back and forth from the tuner, guitar string vibrating freely..

the short loud noise is more evident when leaving the tuner and return to normal operation..

however, it never evolved into a long uncontrolled feedback until I tried..

This also happens with HD Pro firmware v2.20. Based on what I hear, I wouldn't describe it as a squeal, or feedback. What I hear is more like a very brief but dramatic increase in the volume level of the playback as you exit the tuner. I think it could cause equipment or physical (ear) damage if the volume is at a loud level when the tuner is engaged.

I will also open a ticket.

Just curious: does this also happen with the cd/mp3 input on the HD500 when, say, an mp3 backing track is being played? The HD Pro doesn't have this input so I can't test it, but the info may be useful for Line 6 in resolving this issue.

The first response to my ticket was incorrect - it stated that the issue is fixed in the latest firmware. I have responded to keep the ticket open, and requested that support attempt to reproduce the issue. That should be easy to do.

I am going to see this through to the point where it is logged as a bug, or a reasonable explanation provided as to why not.

But, realistically, I think that's all we can expect right now. It will be logged for inclusion in some future firmware release, if any, but I don't think it warrants a firmware release on its own merits. It's a fairly obscure bug that applies to very specific circumstances, and there's an easy workaround. Knowing about this bug, in future I will be sure to pause audio playback, or simply turn the Pod HD Master Volume down, momentarily while I disengage the tuner. Problem avoided.

I will stick with the good old 2.10! It doesn't have any issues.  Yea, I doubt that this will ever be fixed.  I have lost total confidence in Line 6 over the past 2 or so years. No matter bug or not the behavior of the device should be the same. Thanks for trying.

Same here, I'm lucky and don't need the fixes in firmware past 2.10.  Now if they came out with an improvement like a better EQ I'd be all over it.  I'm thrilled at what I have for under $500 bucks.  Gott'a take it for what it is.

Great news, Tony. Thanks to all at Line 6 for responding to this issue and releasing a fix in just over a month. That's a very fast turnaround in my mind, given the complexity of code fixes and then regression testing all the various pieces of equipment.

This was the old firmware that still has the issue I explained above.  This firmware was available 3 months ago.  So this was not a fix or a new firmware release.  Curious to know why Tony posted this on this thread if there was no resolution?

Thanks for pointing out an ambiguity in the release numbering. I'm confused.

The latest firmware available in the Downloads section shows v1.3 for the HD500x/Prox with a release date of yesterday, May28. That is consistent with Tony's post.

However the latest firmware available for the HD500/Bean/Pro shows v2.31, but with different release dates for all three. V2.31 for the HD500 was released in April, while the HD Pro release was May15 and the HD Bean was yesterday, May28. I don't know which version numbers actually fix the issue discussed in this thread.

I will ask Tony to clarify.

Cool.  No problem to both of you.  I was wondering if there was a new firmware out newer than 2.31.  Thank you for letting me/us know that you guys are still working on a fix for the tuner bug.
