It's Out Jtv 2.10, + Workbench Hd Through The Pod!

Recommended Posts

I was hoping the Ideascale item would show it as Released; that would be clear confirmation. But, like Zap, I am inclined to think it may have been fixed intentionally but Ideascale has not yet been updated to reflect it. In any case, it's not the Ideascale status that matters; it's whether I still hear the popping. And I should have time later today to test and report on that.

Thanks silverhead - I appreciate that.

I've been playing around for the last 10 minutes or so, trying to replicate the popping noise in v2.1 that was so evident in v2.0. I have not been able to do so, using the same 'recipe' that consistently produced it previously. There is still the inevitable lag/delay in the sound while the preset definition is replaced in the Pod's working memory, but the loud pop that used to accompany it is gone.

My conclusion: unless and until someone else can successfully reproduce the pops I consider it fixed in JTV firmware v2.1.

That's cool...now I'm one step closer to taking the plunge.

I think there are several good reasons to take the plunge:

- Workbench HD connectivity via Pod HD devices

- Spank model bug in Workbench HD fixed

- popping gone when changing JTV models via Pod HD preset change

... and the only reported problem (I think) with the update itself was solved by recharging the JTV battery.

... and if you encounter problems you can always roll back.....

All in all, based on reports to date, a very successful update imho. Kudos to Line 6.

EDIT: I forgot to mention one real big advantage to this update: increased productivity in tone shaping by being able to use both device editors simultaneously (compatible Pod HDxxx / HDxxx Edit and JTVxx / Workbench HD).

hi

I have a Pod hd500 x , what about this one works with old workbench?

I believe those of us who own a HD500X, but still prefer using the old Tyler Variax FW1.9 (or earlier) along with the old "non HD" Workbench app are out of luck.

Forces me to keep my older HD500 that still runs the  "non HD" Workbench app. - or use the clunky VDI -USB Hardware box and lots of cables

But I hope I'm wrong!

You are absolutely correct. the old workbench will never work on the X models.

I may have spoken too soon - though this is pretty weird.  I upgraded the JTV this morning no problem. Then using it this afternoon, my HD500 has gone haywire.  The screen continuously defaults to the volume/tone control page and the channel volume is permanently stuck at full on.  Changing models etc makes no difference, nor does rebooting. Whilst the knobs appear to reduce the volume, the setting reverts to 99% as soon as the control is released (either on the unit or in HD500 Edit).  Has anyone seen similar behaviour?

EDITED - Just rebooted again and left it longer before powering up.  Problem seems to have gone away.  Will report further if it re-emerges.

EDITED AGAIN - problem came back.  Pretty sure it was after I connected the JTV.  Rebooting failing to clear the problem. Troubleshooting further.

LAST TIME - False alarm.  It wasn't connecting the JTV that was the problem but the L6 Link. For some reason the volume control on the DT25 had got stuck on maximum and this was overriding the HD500 and software instructions.  Fiddling with the control sorted the problem - for now. I'm terrified of gigging with this rig!

have you updated the pod? how about resetting the globals? (hold left while powering on)

Thanks.  I did the last Pod update when it came out but haven't had any trouble since.  I'll try the power on suggestion if it recurs.

I did the update thank you Line6 I have been waiting for months on this...  Its amazing how much faster workbench loads the Banks it used to take a minute or so now it just takes seconds...  Thank you Again,  I have faith once more I made the right decision...

OK, I decided to throw caution to the wind...

Ultimately the update worked, but not without one rather scary hiccup. First time through, connected through the 500X, it failed with the familiar MIDI error message, which I've seen before with other updates. However, this one was also accompanied by the entire alt. tuning knob lighting up royal blue. Multiple attempts would not clear the error, so I unplugged and powered off everything.

Oddly enough, when I reconnected to Monkey, the JTV registered as having 2.1 installed, despite the fact that it never finished the update. Also, I had elected not to keep the JTV models I had on the guitar, but when I connected to Workbench after the failed attempt, the models I had previously created were still on there, so the process obviously hadn't completed.

Attempt number 2 after powering everything off worked as advertised, and connecting to Workbench through the 500X works fine. So what went on the first time, I have no idea...I remain very puzzled as to why flashing firmware is still so hit or miss...but I've had that repeatedly that since the beginning, so it's certainly not peculiar to 2.1.

I still find, as have some others, that the Strat models need string volume adjustment...the low E, A, and D strings jump up and smack you in the face, especially in positions 4 and 5. But this is easily fixable, and also not a new issue for me. I suspect that string gauge may contribute to this...I play 11's....so perhaps the increased tension on the piezos is the culprit...just guessing. At the end of the day I don't care though...that's what Workbench is there for.

Popping sound when switching patches seems to have gone bye-bye...or at least significantly diminished, although I have not really experimented with it much yet. Still futzing with string volumes right now.

All in all, it seems to be a big improvement, so I gotta give credit where credit is due. All except for the update process itself, which frankly sucks, and is still relentlessly annoying. Of all the flipping back and forth with firmware that I've done, it's more or less 50/50. It has failed on me multiple times (both thru the 500X and with the goofy USB dongle), but never with the entire alt. tuning knob turning a different color...no idea what that means, if anything.

So at the moment it's working...and I'm not gonna poke at it anymore unless something craps out....probably won't go near it again until the next update. Still way to buggy a process...batting .500 will get you to Yankee Stadium, but it's not an impressive stat for a firmware install.

It's odd how some people have bother updating and others don't.  I updated mine without a hitch.  The whole process took less than 4 minutes.  Just connected the JTV to my POD HD Pro, selected the device in Monkey and presto.  Perhaps it's an issue with the interface through the 500X or the USB interface with the PC.

I used the USB dongle to update the JTV because I did not know if it would work through my Pod.  I copied the flash file to my PC before doing the update and I had Monkey update from the file.  That takes  the internet out of the update picture.  It worked fine first time.  WB works great with my HD500x connected to my Dell Laptop running XP.  It is very responsive even though my Laptop is a dog.  I had Edit running same time and everything was playing nicely together just as it should!

Well, I've had it fail with both connections, a fairly equal number of times, lol...so your guess is as good as mine.

So far, I've been able to eventually get it to work. But I fear the day that the guitar gets bricked, cause this time lights started changing color...that was a new one for me.

I'm not complaining about the final results...only the circuitous path that always seems to be required to get there. Now that it's in there, everything works as it should.

Well that was awesome.

Just spent about an hour wringing out this new firmware update and I am appreciative to Line6 for attending the issues many have had. Notably, I could run the Variax HD software easily which meant I did actually run it. That loaded instantly and is good to have that tool available again. Yes I know it worked with the dongle thingy, but to me that process was lame enough that I never bothered to hook it up except twice. Nice.

Overall, my JTV59 and Pod HD500 FEEL like a cohesive unit now after having felt more like a mishmash. Can a few relatively simple things like this make that kind of a difference? Absolutely. I look forward to diving in deeply in the coming weeks and getting to create some signature sounds I have loved half a lifetime like a Gretch Country Gent with a Fender Twin or a Gibson Firebird through a jumped plexi. Awesome.

because the old workbench is 10 years old at least, and they are no longer maintaining it...

especially when you break down the numbers.....

meaning how many gen1 variax owners own 500x's

that's just one of the trade-off's you make when staying with older software/firmware.

is sad that people who have the pod hd 500x can not use the old workbench, I much prefer the 1.9 but not not own the usb interface. Why does not the line 6 pod hd 500x enabled to work with the old workbench?

I did the upgrade last night; HD500, JTV, and HD Workbench (HD Edit already up to date).

As I am "between bands" at the moment I decided to just let it overwrite all of the patches. JTV connected to HD connected to laptop.

Upgrade process was fine except for the Windows 8 doesn't allow Monkey to install HD Workbench directly for which L6 redirects you to a direct download page - I suspect that it is about Monkey needing to be run with elevated privileges to install other software.

Opened HD Edit and HD Workbench at the same time - great.

Global string adjustments were retained, everything else was reset to factory as expected.

Strat had over-loud EADG strings that needed to be made quieter to balance the top BE (down to 70% in some cases), but once done it sounded good and positions 2 and 4 are definitely still 2 pickups after saving back to JTV.  Also recreated a super strat using the 89 humbuckers in Custom 1.

Created a few simple patches - 12 string Acoustic, 6 String Acoustic, then a Clean/Crunch one and I noticed something strange - I added a Volume as last Effect in the HD500 chain and it defaulted to Exp2 (which I always have connected, and which I always use as my "Global Volume"), but it was Exp1 that actually changed the volume despite what it said in HD Edit. Anybody else noticed this?

Unfortunately it was all sounding so good that I got a bit lost in playing and forgot to actually test the clicks when swapping JTV Models that I had intended to test, but I didn't notice anything either, and the overall workflow with both applications open is really great. Previously I just couldn't be bothered and lived with the JTV models after the global string volume reduction and editing directly on the HD500.

I give Line 6 a 9 out of 10 for these updates  :)

I have noticed this since even before the update.  I always have to at least save the patch, go to another atch and return to it in order for it to switch to Exp 2.  Even then sometimes it requires further tweaking.  In those cases, I have to change it to Exp1, save it again, change it back to Exp 2 and save it yet again and then it sticks.  Bizarre behavior, but I'm used to it and once it is finally set, it seems to stay there.

I have had the same problems with midi timeout messages and odd light changes. The latest update to 2.1 caused the alt tuning to switch to green and the model switch turn blue after I got the midi error. Restarted my PC and tried again and it completed successfully but still is disconcerting. B and E strings are still a problem but is easily fix with WB via my HD500.

Cruisinon2, what sort of condition is your VDI cable? Mines a kinked mess and I'm beginning to wonder if that causing the errors.

Cheers,

I have had same issues when updating to fw 2.0 - and I was told to try the ethernet cable that came with the JTV to connect to the HD500 instead of the much longer VDI - and I found that the success rate increased but it still failed some times - so it is worth trying the JTV supplied cable for the updates as it is shorter and seems to significantly lower the chance of the Midi errors.

Cable is only a couple of months old and in good shape. This time I was using the longer 30' one from L6. In the past I had always used the shorter one that came with the guitar and designed specifically for connecting to the uber-silly USB dongle, and it didn't work any better or worse with that one. Success/failure rates are pretty much the same for either one, so at least in my case, I don't think the cables have much to do with it...either that or they are both equally crappy, lol. :P

Hey guys can any of you confirm that the models on the JTV switch faster with the 2.10 update?? There is a very slight lag when switching the Models in version 2.0. The magnetic pick-ups don't have the lag but the models do. It's very slight but it is there. I'd like to know if there is any change in that please.

Switching is quieter for sure.  Not sure about quicker but they seem quick to me when turning the knob or moving the 5 way.  Having WB work with my HD500x is a great improvement.  I wasn't ever using WB because it was a PIA to use the separate interface.  Now I can use Edit and WB while playing through my HD500x!

I haven't noticed that the models change any more quickly, just more smoothly (no popping sound). There is an unavoidable lag/delay of some duration when switching models that is not present with the mags. The technical reality is that the Variax must spend a few milliseconds transferring data (the model definition) from stored memory to working memory. That operation is not necessary when switching the mags. That lag time can be minimized but it can't be zero. If this update reduced it I can't notice it.

Updated last night via the Variax dongle (I backed up my Variax presets because I've spent a lot of time getting strings & volumes leveled). No problems.

Workbench Software runs great via the HD500. The models load slightly faster into Workbench when I first started it up. Still took about a minute to get all 60 models loaded.

No issues or complaints here. A very nice update!
