Using Both Inputs - What To Expect?

Howdy hey -

So, as I settle in with all the new stuff (500x/JTV/DT) I'm starting to think that I'll probably end up with the JTV VDI'd into the HD, and keep my Relay into the Gtr Input for my other axes.  (Was originally gonna wireless the JTV, but the new update makes things interesting....)

I'm still learning about this rig, and keep noting the complexities around the input selection ("same"/"none"/Variax" and so on...) and the dual stereo signal paths (I'll be running into a single DT, so mono....)

So with an input to the 1/4" AND a Variax in the VDI..... what to expect?

- Will BOTH inputs be available on any patch, or must the desired active choice be programmed?

- The whole "input levels" thing - till now I set the second for "same", seems to have been working well.  Will I see a signal drop with the two set separately?

- Will I have to keep an active mono effect in the Pre position so as not to have to muck around with the dual stereo thing?  (Running out in mono, remember...)

Any insights would be helpful - and btw, a lot of these questions get asked from my desk here at work, I'll obviously be trial-and-erroring when I'm with the stuff.  My bosses are pretty indulgent, but might draw the line at my setting up the gear here and wailing away.

Thanks!!

Ric

Thanks guys - always appreciated!

if you set the two inputs separately whatever input signal will be half the level you'd get with the default input settings if your chain is in pre position..

this is because with the default input settings everything connected to input 1 (guitar, aux or variax) will be copied to input 2 (input2=same), and both 2 same signals will go through the same chain in pre position..

Arrrrgh!  My brain hurts already - thank god it's a weekend, I'll have time to start sussin' this out.

Y'know - with all the discussion/confusion I've seen on this issue I'm surprised L6 hasn't put out an update to provide a "keep it simple" signal path option.  Input levels auto-balanced, mono thru the amp (without having to place a box inline to force it), stereo out only if such effects are placed post.  I mean, I've been playing guitar a long time (sigh.... LONG time) and the only "stereo" guitars I've played have been more novelty than anything else.  The power and flexibility of the HD is impressive - and I'm certainly not saying I'll never use many of it's potentials - but to just "get on with it" an option to simplify the path would seem to be a no-brainer, I'm not (by miles) the only one hitting this conceptual wall.

Not pissing & moaning here - it's a great device, and with my GNX serving me well for the past 10 years or so I'd expect to be using the HD for....... well, at my age I'll probably end up willing it to someone.  Jes' sayin'.....

Thanks again, guys!

Hey Hurghanico -

Thanks for the empathy - I've noted you as being particularly helpful 'round these parts, and very concise and clear in your explanations.  I'm sure it's appreciated by all.

Yeah - one of the first things I did when acquiring the new setup was start checking out the links you cited, as well as getting over to the "bobbo" site - also a guy who's done some great work.  Kudos to y'all...  I'll get this 'gator wrassled to the ground eventually - but it sure does thrash around while you're trying to get a grip on it!  I've had this stuff for a little less than a month, and I'm already on my third re-think about system configuration and application.  Thank god for the abundance of program slots, cause it looks like I'll have to have two entirely different configs for the two different projects I'm currently involved in.  Wait - make that three, I'll need a set for studio work, too.

Ah well - that's what my signature quote means.

Side note - in chasing down your posts and tips, I've come across your music postings.  My compliments to you - great tone, wonderful execution, very clean technique.  You have skills - congrats!  (Yeah, I've been playing a long time - but "longevity" and "compentence" are not always the same thing....)  Keep on doin' what you do, my friend...

And again, thanks to all for the help!

Ric

I hear you, I also have been playing guitar a long time, and I agree with what you said in your reply..
