4 cable method question

Kinda of new here and what I want to do I'm not sure is possible, or if it is even feasible.  I have a Marshall DSL40C and a HDPOD500X.  I like the distortation channel on the Marshall but I would like to bypass it with the FX loop on the POD.  If I setup the POD with the 4 cable method would I be able to switch the FX loop on and bypass the front of the marshall.

Example:  I have the distortation channel active on the marshall, I then activate the footswitch for the FX loop, this in turn by passes the distortation channel and the eq on the marshall and uses the amp and eq I have setup in the chain after the fx loop.  Of course I would also have a footswitch for to turn on and off the amp model after the fx loop.

A simpler way to look at it is I want the Marshall setup to use the distortation channel with how I have the EQ setup, then bypass the front of the amp, which would bypass the channel and the EQ and use the EQ and amp from the POD.  The marshall has has a limitation on only having one EQ for both channels.

I aslo would guess that if it could do this then the setting for the POD would also need to be changed on the fly for the FX loop which can't be done.

I don't understand everything (forgive my english) but...

With the 4 cables method, if you put an fx loop in the hd, you use the preamp of your marshall. If you turn off the fx loop in the hd, the sound goes directly from the 1/4 output of the hd, until the return of the marshall's fx loop. Then you can use presets of the hd.

If I understand correctly when the FX loop is on then the pod will not use the Amps preamp?  This is exactly what I am looking for.

No you have it backwards.

With the standard 4CM the signal travels from your guitar to the POD, then from the POD FX Send to the Amp pre section, then from the Amp's FX Send back into the POD FX Return, then from the POD outs to the Amp FX Return.

If you want the tone to go through the Amp pre section you must turn the POD FX loop ON.

If you want the tone to use the POD amp models, turn the POD FX loop OFF.

Yes that is it.

You can put the HD loop in any fx slot in the chain.

This way you can use pedal fx in the HD before your amps preamp and then process the spacial or rack FX after your amps preamp in the HD before it returns to your power amp.

Usually just before the HD'd amp block.

If you have an Amp block you need to turn it off.

When you want the HD amp turn off the loop as suggested but turn on the amp block.

Adjust the master on your amp when the HD loop is on and can set a pedal to turn off the loop and the amp on, and toggle till volume is matched.

Just tried this and it worked perfectly.  Now as far as where to put the fx in the chain, do I put the HD amp at the end with the fx in front of it leaving all other pedals in front of the FX block?

normally you would put effects like wah, compression, and distortion in front of the FX block or amp model and mods, delays and reverbs after the FX block or amp model...  There is no absolute right or wrong here, see what works best for you.

Just a few more quesitons so I can understand this better.  With the 4CM the setup looks like this:

Guitar -- GUITAR IN (500X)

FX SEND -- Front of AMP

FX LOOP SEND (AMP) -- FX RETURN L/MONO (500X)

UNBALANCED OUTPUT L/MONO (500X) -- FX LOOP RETURN (AMP)

Does turninng on the FX Loop on the 500X send the signal in the path above?

Does turning off the FX Loop on the 500x send the signal this way:

Guitar -- GUITAR IN (500X)

UNBALANCED OUTPUT L/MONO (500X) -- FX LOOP RETURN (AMP)

Yes on both questions...

Hello everyone, my name is Craig. I'm new here, and I just picked up my HD Pro X. I am using a simple 2 cable method as detailed from my 5150 II manual. It seems to work ok, but I have lost control of the head. The volume is adjusted on the POD, as well as the eq.  Is there a better method to hook up my POD? I'm not well versed in hooking up multi effects units like this. So, if anyone has any advise to help me achieve the best sound while utilizing the POD HD Pro X to its fullest potential, then please let me know the best way to hook this up to my 5150 II. Thank you all very much; and I hope that I'm introduced to some folks on here who share my love of music, guitars, Eddie Van Halen, and creating some really heavy, bad-lollipop rock and roll tones.  All my best!
