UX1 and speakers?

Recommended Posts

It's been a year almost since I started using UX1 and I gotta say I still sometimes can't believe what is coming out of this little black box. :)  All this time I've been listening trough my headphones, and I wanna buy a decent set of speakers. So what is the best solution, I've been  looking on youtube, there are people praising Hi Fis, others suggest studio monitors, and then there are those  who say that a simple 2.1  system would suffice. I'm lost in the sea of all these products. I just wanna have something that will give me accurate tone from pod farm,  and something with good stereo sound for music. Something in range lets say 200-300 USD.

Other thing confusing, many people on youtube go like this is good for electro music, this is good for hip hop, ok what is good for metal  or  rock in general ? :)

I have the UX2 and I still love the thing. I pipe it into anything I can find lol. For example using the headphones out into a VOX Mini 3's Aux input, Spider Jam's CD/mp3 input,or my Bose stereo.

Like I said I've been looking on youtube for solution, but there is just to many different products to choose from. Like for example one guy pointing Krk Rokit 5 monitors, other one saying those are good, only problem is in their low freq, so forget about bass, Then someone suggests m audio av 40 or bx5 d2, instantly you have like 20 people saying don't buy that piece of sh...rather go and buy logitech 2.1. .And they give you like tons of information but only about products specs, yet you cannot really decide, because let's face it, any sound test on youtube is processed. I know I'm making a big deal out of this but, we are all audiophiles here, aren't we not?

Studio monitors will give you fairly flat response, but most of them with less than an 8" woofer will be lacking in the bass response.  One exception to that is the JBL LSR305 5" monitors - these sell for $150 each, but recently have been on sale for $120 each.

A 2.1 system is probably NOT what you want for decent stereo guitar sound, as anything the crossover sends to the sub is not going to be stereo and the usual satellite left and right speakers are not very good.

Edirol make good nearfield desktop powered monitors, small, quite loud, good stereo image. JBL; do too. A pair of large old English Tannoy speakers with a powerful amp will give good results (quite flat) if you have the space.  Speakers need to be isolated from connecting surfaces. Spiked stands are a good idea. But the acoustics of your listening room make a lot of difference. Many people monitor on a variety of systems. That way they get an idea of how the mix will sound in different peoples homes. If it sounds good on a ghetto blaster and a hi end monitor, it will probably sound good anywhere.

Thank you for your posts, I really really appreciate it. Currently I'm not thinking about home studio, but nevertheless it would be good to have that option. Also, everybody seem to be on the same page with these JBLs. Sounds like a top notch in this price range?

I used a bookshelf stereo system for a couple years with satisfactory results while I saved up for monitors.

IMHO, JBL's, M-Audio, and KRK active monitors are all very comparable at the lower price point range. I am personally partial to JBL's.

There is nothing wrong with 5" monitors, but if it were me and I could stretch the budget, I would try to get into the 8" category.
