Full amps with HD500X/DT-25

Is there anyone using full amps with their HD500(X) and DT-25 or DT-50?

I had great trouble finding great high gain sounds at high volume on this combination.

After a long search for great tone I ended up using double cab tones with a Line6 drive in front of the amps (drive to 0).

This finally gave me some really great high gain tones that held up at gig volume.

Even though I was really happy with the tones I naturally went on trying to improve them anyways.

Now I am experimenting with using the full amps instead of pre-amps and it seems to me the amps come to life even more this way. At rehearsal it also seemed to hold up.

Does anybody have any experience using full amps at gig volume?

What are your finding?

Yes, I know.

That's why I never tried it in the first place.

I tried it now out of curiosity and I get the feeling it's an improvement.

The patch needs some extra tweaking after changing the amps to full, of course.

I'm just wondering if other players have tried it and what they think of it.

I should have mentioned I'm all for trying any combination available 'cause ya just never know when you'll get a pleasant surprise. I did try the full amp models with my DT50 going into the front, that was just at home and at a modest volume, I didn't dislike it. I switched back to the pre amp models using the L6 link 'cause they didn't seem to need much tweaking at the same level. Of course, if you amp it up you'll hear things you didn't at lower volumes which should go without saying. Give it try when you have time at those gig volumes you might be surprised.

I think I have an Orange emulation I was working on that uses full model instead of just preamp. I've done it a few times actually. I think I have a clean Marshall set up that way too. I just do what sounds best and if it takes a full model instead if a pre, so be it.

I use full amp models with my HD500 connected via L6-link to DT25. The reason is though that I have an issue with the drive in my DT25, it seems it doesn't give the amount of gain you expect when I crank it up (see http://line6.com/support/topic/8489-dt25-drive-issue/).

When I use the full amp models I get the amount of gain I expect. However, now and then my DT25 is working properly and in my opinion the pre-amp models sounds better when DT25 is in normal mode than the full amp models. I think the full amp models sounds more brittle or harsh than the pre amp models. More digital, whatever that means... The pre amp models feel more natural to me.

Anyway, I have managed to tweak some full amp patches to sound OK, even though my tones not often are really high gain, more clean or crunchy. The key is EQ. I use the full amp models for now when we are gigging, until I get my DT25 to work OK, and I have not had any issues with it. Actually, people often gives positive feedback on my tones. I don't think anyone listening at a venue can tell the difference if I use pre amp models or full amp models.

As always, it all comes down to what you think sounds OK or not, no matter how you get your tone!

Ah Grasshopper .... you have truly seen the light. Well done.

Ahhhh Yes Master! Hahaaaa I loved Kung Fu especially when he had to move that hot caldron by lifting it with his forearms and ended up with the permanent burnt in tattoos.

One of the quotes from Kung Fu>>The power to claim life is not superstition, it is destiny. Bow to superstition and you create a new , unhappy destiny.

Kan said: Remember always, that a wiseman walks with his head bowed. Humble, like the dust.

IF IT SOUNDS GOOF IT DOESN"T MATTER HOW YOU GOT THERE

Yes, that is the highest truth when it comes to builiding tone

Therefore my question is not about what's right but about your experiences and conclusions.

Maybe yo found that certain amps sound better to you in full mode. If so which amps were they and why?

Which did you think sounded better in pre amp mode and why?

That's the info I'm after. In the end myown ear will Judge my own tone but it could help me to get some new idea's in the quest for the perfect tone (in my ears).

I have an "indoor gig" and "outdoor gig" setup with my dreamrig. Indoors it's LVM with full models, outdoor its full vol with pre's. Mostly because in LVM, you can leave the amp on standby and set your PA sound coming from the DT's D.I.
