POD HD500X - flangers have a setting called "MANUAL" - what the heck is this?

Some of the flanger effects in the POD HD500X have a parameter called "MANUAL".  I cannot find a description of this parameter in any of the line6 documentation.  And, I can't discern what it does when I adjust it.  Does it have a purpose?  Anyone know what this parameter does?

I think it changes the delay time for the effect, which changes the frequencies being modulated. So depending on where this is set, it should give a different sort of 'flangery' sound. (deep in a tunnel/tube or near an entrance to a tunnel/tube or somewhere in between? is this even a proper description for a flanger?).

Manual is a parameter that's found on most flanger pedals. It's related to the delay time of the effect. Technically, it's controlling LFO offset, and how much effect it actually has depends on where you have the width (or range, same thing, just a different name) set.

This article does a good job of explaining it: http://www.premierguitar.com/articles/Get_More_Out_of_Your_Flanger

The parameters of the Line 6 models are explained with a little detail here (although, it doesn't give a lot of info about this particular parameter): http://line6.com/data/6/0a060b316ac34f0593fabe278/application/pdf/M13/M9/M5%20FX%20Parameters%20-%20English%20%28%20Rev%20B%20%29.pdf

I use the foot controller to control this so when you go toe-heel-toe you manually get the "whoosh" effect. Kind of like putting your finger on the flange of the old tape reels. As you press harder and softer (toe - heel on the controller) you adjust the amount of delay.
