Where Is The Dream Rig...

Recommended Posts

...Forum?

Hey good folks and powers that be of Line 6. I love the forum! I have learned so much about my new gear and it's sounding better and better each day! All I want to do is play guitar. And for that I say THANK YOU!

I notice that there is a Variax forum, there is a Pod Hd 500 forum and there is a DT25/50 forum. But no Dream Rig forum. Us Dream Riggers have spent good dough on great gear. Some of us have pieced their rig together over time and still others, like me, just dropped the loot and got it all in one shot.

Whatever the case may be, we deserve a forum that is specifically DREAM RIG! We deserve a Dream Rig Customtone section that is specifically Dream Rig related.

Unless I am missing something, It doesn't exist. Wait... let me open another tab on my browser and double check. I'll be back in a second....................................................................................Nope, no Dream Rig specific forum or Custometone section. It would be nice to have one because owning each piece individually is one thing, but puttin' it all together deserves a Forum!

Can a brother get an AMEN on that?

I'd second that. Would be nice to have a subforum for those of us with the whole Rig. I have uploaded a few patches specifically for the DR into CustomTone. As far as I'm aware, there isn't really a specific spot for DR rigs/patches to be loaded which makes one have to search through everything POD HD compatible to find. Can we get another subforum Line6?

Thanks!

So, I've got this incredible new rig. It is the Line 6 flagship amp. It is called the DT50. I have a 2x12 model which is the largest and loudest and most expensive amp combo that Line 6 sells. I also have a Pod HD 500 which is the newest and most powerful and expensive foot controlled fx processor that Line 6 makes. I also have a JTV 69 which is this incredible guitar that can change tunings and change from a Strat to a Les Paul to a Sitar at the flick of a switch. Together, these powerful individual pieces make up what Line 6 markets as  the Dream Rig. With this rig you can change guitars, tunings, amp models and fx on a preset by preset basis.

Guess what it doesn't have?......

A FORUM!!!!!!!!!

WE WANT A FORUM! WE WANT A FORUM! WE WANT A FORUM!

What do we want?...

A FORUM!!!

When do we want it?.....

NOW!

Those of us with the "daydream rig" (JTV > HD500 > L2t/L3t) would also enjoy such a forum!

Can those of us who got their FRFR solution before the Lnt speakers were announced, but needed FRFR over DT for acoustic sounds also join in?

JTV > HD500 > FBT Maxx (or JBL EONnn, or QSC Knn, or ...)

I don't disagree about the Custom Tone area as you need all the components for that to work properly, but on the forum side it will all get fragmented far to easily.

I think the separate areas for each product works fine and I would expect that if you had this exclusive forum for those with the full dream rig that it might struggle to get momentum due to relatively low numbers of visitors because of the high cost of entry.

Some people chose not to get the DT Amps because we sacrificed the valve perfection on guitar sounds for additional flexibility of being able to use the Acoustic Models, or the Mic inputs, (or auxiliary feeds such as keyboards) into the HD500 without a second amplification system.

I'm not saying I don't see the point entirely, but it seems to me that even with the Dream Rig, most of the questions are usually focused on one piece over the others. And really, from a settings standpoint, the vast majority of the tweaking is done in the POD itself. I just think that they probably want to avoid making it too segmented so that there are different forums for every different permutation of product.

I agree with phil_m.  Splitting off into another forum might mean we in this forum miss out on questions about individual components from which we might benefit.  I follow so many forums already that I prefer not to add another one. I'm fine with reading about DR questions in this forum.

That's a fair argument.

A global search of the forum will get you any info about individual components. So you really won't miss out. I disagree with phil_m on one point. While the vast majority of tweaking is on the pod itself, hooking up the Variax through the Workbench and your Pod and your DT or L2t/L3t is a whole different and unique tweaking ordeal. And because there aren't as many of us Dream Riggers as the rest of the forum participants, it's even more important that we have our own sub forum because I find that getting answers to specific Dream Rig questions difficult. Pod questions are one thing, but pod answers may be completely different when using a Variax and a DT.

I found a great way to double up a single coil and a lipstick pickup in the neck position of a Rickenbacher body.I run them in parallel. I blend the Variax mags with the Rickenbacher using the exp2. In the pod, I use a Gibtone amp full. But I switch the the A/B to A and switch to Triode instead of pentode. All through the VDI, which I had made for me by a guy at my local computer store. It cost me a lot less than the Line 6 and I got it in a custom length and color. I digress, I also connect a 1/4 inch out of the Variax into another amp just because I can. I find that the Variax pickups can be a bit thin sounding on their own, so I assign the gain of the Gibtone to the tone knob of the Variax. I can roll up warmth when I need it. Also, turn down the master dep on the Gibtone, roll up the volume on the lipstick pickup and set the volume pot control @ 250. It's pretty sweet. I have a whole bank set up with this patch. Patch "A" is set to an open G tuning, patch "B" is set to an open blah blah tuning..... You get the point. I really want to share my findings with this set up. I want to share my tones.....

But...

Where do I post this?

If you don't have a Variax, my pickup choices are meaningless to you. If you don't have a DT, who cares if I stick my Pentode up my A/B and out my Triode. Who cares about changing turnings on a preset basis if you ain't rockin the The Dream Rig?

Yes, I am talking about individual components, so I guess I could post my Variax stuff on the Variax forum and my DT stuff on the DT forum and my pod stuff on the pod forum. Or we can have a Dream Rig sub forum where all Pod, DT, and Variax questions are asked and answered under the common understanding that we are talking about The Dream Rig and what works well for that particular setup.

Can I get an AMEN!?!

Seconded.  Very happy with the QSC K10, but would be great to talk with others.

I am playing now the DR since early 2011 and I am gigging with it. I have also posted several Threads on the old DR-Forum, because I initially (and still) believed in a separate forum for DR-user.

But all in all: there are several pros and cons. Let me point out my thoughts to it:

Yes, you can say that it always affects one component (for shure). But this is only half of the (my) truth: I found out that it often affects TWO components. It is very often the POD HD AND either the DTXX OR the JTVXX, because the POD HD is the hub for the Dream rig (it controls also the JTV and the DT-amp). So I found myself sometimes posting the SAME issue on the POD HD AND either on the JTV OR the DT-Forum.

Yes, you can say that with more forums you may loose control of the already existing overload of information. I personally get the new Threads to my E-Mail account, so I am on spot. I don't think that is really in issue.

Another aspect I figured out is that the way I am using the JTV, the HD5000 and the DT50 is different as if I would use it, if I integrate only one of these into another guitar rig. Especially my presets on the POD HD (this is the hub) are not at all comparable to any other presets I would imagine just using the POD HD and / or a DT-amp. This has developed over the last 2 1/2 years. Especially how to control the Dream Rig via POD HD or over the JTV-knobs is something I feel a lack somehow.

Another aspect are new users which are buying the complete DR: clearly speaking a lot of them I think are lost when starting (like me initially). A DR-Forum could be a serious kick-starter to overcome a hard learning curve which it is in my opinion.

Although issues it may affect only one or often two parts of the DR, user want to have a "HOME BASE" - being part of a community of proud DR-user - RIGHT ?????????????????

Finally the most speaking point to me which points to a DR-Forum are the user feedbacks here: PEOPLE WANT IT !

Had my first "real" performance with the forumless Dream Rig last night. All in all it it was a success. We rocked a sold out house for 3 hours! I have some Dream Rig specific findings that I would love to share on a dedicated Dream Rig forum. But that ain't happening...yet! What I will say is that sound check would have been so much easier if I had HD Edit and Variax Workbench in a single program on my iPad. It would be incredibly helpful during performance as well. For example, I found that the room was a bit boomy during sound check. I had a great tone through the HD 500 and the DT50 and when I roll back the bass, I lost the quality of the tone. I pretty much use various modified spank models on my JTV69. So what I did was hook up my laptop, opened workbench and slid the pickups toward the bridge a scosh. Bam! Booming gone tone compromised very little. During the performance, how cool would it be to be able to teak the gain of your tube screamer or roll up some bottom on your eq or change out a pickup without having to bust out your laptop! Just mount the iPad on the mic stand and there go!

A perfect example of something from which all Variax users can benefit, not just DR users.  If you guys get your forum, I'll just have to bookmark two Line6 forums.

Most certainly could benefit all who use an HD and Variax. But really....? "I'll just have to bookmark two Line6 forums?" If that is the worst of it, then you are doing pretty well! Trust me, I have no desire to work your bookmarking tabs to death, but I and others feel that it would be nice to have a forum that is dedicated to The Dream Rig. I'm sorry if that places an over the top bookmarking burden on those who follow and participate in the forum. What it boils down to is this, If one doesn't have all three components, (HD, Variax, DT50) they don't have the number of variables as those that do. Because of that, Dream Riggers should have a place to share and discuss those variables that are unique to the Dream Rig. Even if it means that one may have to get an email alert from another forum.

Here's a suggestion - use this forum and just put "DREAM RIG" in the thread title.

The people have spoken. I am curious...Why are you opposed to a dedicated forum? Clearly a lot of people want it and yet you seem dedicated to opposing this move. What's the deal? A dedicated Dream Rig Forum would hurt no one. It would help those of us who would love the platform and it would be a great addition to the Line 6 Support forum. So what is the real problem?

I'm guessing the DT amp forum would be a good place for the dream rig discussions, as you'd have a higher percentage of folks with those amps doing the dream rig configuration than not, as that's really the intent of the design of those amps. Until you can persuade whoever sets up the forums that you should have a specific forum for that combination, the DT forum seems most likely, rather than the JTV or HD forums to hit your target audience. I'd venture a lot of folks have the POD HD's without having a JTV, and a lot of folks have the JTV without a POD HD, and smaller percentage have all three. The highest percentage of Dream Rig owners would be the people who own the DT25 or DT50.

To me the real problem is complaining about the lack of a forum to folks who apparently cannot open a new forum and trying to put people on opposite "sides" when no "sides" exist.... I agree there should be a Dream Rig Forum, but until Line 6 opens one, the most logical place would be the DT forum in my opinion.

Hi All

I've been enjoying this thread...really thoughtful stuff from most posters. As aDream Rig enthusiast (JTV69k, Pod HD 500 and DT25/ Spider Valve Mk II), I would love a Dream Rig forum too! For those who don't want this, fine, don't go to the Dream Rig Forum, content yourselves with what you like. For the rest of us, this particular forum would be ideal. By the way, all my tones on Customtone are designed for the Dream Rig. Hope you find some that are usefull, and perhaps pick up some Dream Rig tips and subtleties. Anyway, that was the intention...a broad palette of tones, styles and possibilities. Enjoy! Amazing tones with this equipment. I just Love it!!!

I am with you all the way! It seems someone didn't like me questioning the motivation of another poster on this thread and I got a "thumbs down" for trying to root out the real issue for not wanting a "Dream Rig" specific forum. I meant no harm. I'm just excited about my gear and want to get the most out of it. My apologies to those who may feel that asking someone to clarify themselves is disagreeable. With that said....

You are right!!! There are no "sides" at all. We are all Line6'ers! Every corner of this forum has help me immensely in getting my tone together! Every question asked and answered helps us all! And you are right again, that in lieu of a dedicated "Dream Rig" forum or sub-forum, the most logical place to post Dream Rig stuff is on the DT forum. But that still is a poor substitute for a dedicated Dream Rig forum, because adjusting my stacked lipstick pickups output on my hollow body in workbench and altering the Class A/B on a Gibtone while assigning the drive of the Gibtone to the tone knob on the JTV69 and blending the mag pickups with exp2 and assigning the output of the tube screamer to my JTV69 volume knob is very very Dream Rig Specific!

How wonderful it would be to share that with the admitted minority of Dream Rig owners. How cool would it be to have the ability to share that very specific customtone with other Dream Riggers without having to search through every tone listed that is clearly not designed for a Dream Rig. Why overlook the minority of people who have purchased some of the most expensive stuff that Line 6 makes. "The tyranny of the majority shall not supersede the rights of the minority" (My 7 year old is learning about Plato so I thought I'd throw that one in for fun!) :P  I don't believe that a dedicated forum for all that stuff is too much to ask. No offense meant to anyone. Just talking to my fellow Line 6'ers!

Now...Get out there and play some music!!!

  • 2 weeks later...

Doesn't look like Line6 is too interested in placing a link to a dream rig specific sub forum. Such a shame since there is clearly a desire from Dream Rig owners to have one. I guess I will share my Dream rig stuff here...

When creating new patch, I am a huge fan of creating them while connected to workbench. Here is my process for alternate Strat style tones.

1. Figure out my tone goal.(clean, dirty, distorted)

2. Pick my amp

3. Make that amp sound good with he mag pickups first. (Very Important!)

4. Pick pick your single coil pickups

5. With pickups in place, cycle through the various body styles

6. Adjust angles and position of pickups

7. A/B the modeled pickups with the mags and make any changes necessary

Don't forget that you can stack pickups for a thicker sound

The goal is not to make the modeled strat sound like the mag strat but to have various starts where one is thicker or thinner or more scooped or more round, louder or softer In phase or out. It's up to you.

Then I move to the DT.

I find that cranking the amp a bit on the AC30 for example, and switching to triode really adds a nice growl. I also like to assign the drive to my tone knob. It's easier for me to control with my finger than my foot if I were to assign it to an expression pedal. You just gotta remember to roll the tone knob back if you are going to switch back to mags.

Once I am satisfied with what I have, I assign it to a position on the HD. Now my Mags sound as good as the model and yet they are very different in tone.

I would live to hear other strategies from other Dream Riggers on our own forum. But until that mystical magical day comes, post em here!
