Let's say I've chosen the JCM800 Pre to play through. So I have that plus I've chosen a cabinet. Guess what? I have sound. But isn't a preamp supposed to be paired with a power amp? I don't see any power amps in the POD. So do I just accept the fact that in the POD a power amp isn't needed?

If you choose the non-pre version of the JCM800, you get the preamp and the poweramp.  If you choose the pre version, you just get the preamp.  The pre version works very well when you're going into the effects return of your amplifier.  That way the POD models the pre-amp but you use the power amp of your actual amplifier.  The pre version also works awesome when using a Line 6 DT series amp.

I don't use a real amp. I just plug into the POD.

In which case you will be better off using the full versions of the models (which include both the pre-amp and power amp stages of the amps) - in other words don't use the ones that end with PRE.

Having said that - there is no right or wrong - it's all about getting the sound you want - so if you think one of the PRE models sound best then use that.
