Unable to get sound to cabinet with hd500x and spider ii 112 as power amp

Hey guys,

So I just received my pod hd500x and was extremely excited to hook it up to play through my current gear (a line 6 spider ii 112 combo and a 2x12 cabinet). So I have everything hooked up as follows, which matches what I have read in previous threads:

Guitar -> guitar in on pod -> 1/4 out on pod -> guitar in on spider -> direct out on spider -> speaker cabinet

I am starting the spider in "test mode" by holding tap as I power it on. Unfortunately, sound comes out of the combo amp and not the speaker cabinet when everything is hooked up (no idea why since I have a cable in the direct out port). Funny enough, it will play through if I don't use the test mode, which proves that the wiring of the cables is not the problem. Could it be that the cabinet is not getting enough power in the test mode and so the spider is defaulting to just playing through its own speaker (I have the spider plugged directly into the wall)? I'm at a loss on this one and pretty bummed since I have read so many others do the same thing.

Thanks in advance!

If this is just a passive speaker cabinet you're talking about, the direct out won't be able to power it. You need a power amp. With some combo amps, there are additional speaker output that allow you to connect extension cabinets. I don't believe the Spider II has those, though. You could use the direct out into a power amp of some sort and then go to your speaker cabinet. If you're looking for something small, the EHX 44 Magnum pedal gets good reviews: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/44Magnum?adpos=1o1&creative=55281441601&device=c&matchtype=&network=g&gclid=CIGk9r3Xk8ECFVFgMgodFGkAbQ

It is just a passive cabinet, but I got the idea that I would be able to power it from this thread:

Although the OP seems to have an actual head, the guy advising him claims to run his spider ii 112 in the same fashion that I'm attempting to. It's also weird how it will power it without issues when I don't have it in "test mode". The only issue with that is that having it on any of the clean settings still colors the tone more than I would like.

In that thread, the guy said he was connecting his cabinet to the Spider's speaker output. That would work. I don't know if the Spider has a 1/4" jack for the speaker connection or if it's hardwired. From the pictures I've seen, I can't tell. If it's 1/4" jack, you should be able to just take a speaker cable from the jack to your speaker cabinet. Obviously if you do this, the speaker in the combo will be disabled.

It appears that it is hardwired, which is why I assumed he was doing this all through the direct out. It looks like using the spider will be more hassle than it's worth.

Here's another thread I just found which confirms there is no speaker out on mine

Thank you guys for your quick help! I'm going to try to run it through my surround sound via my computer for now while I save for a power amp

EDIT: Out of curiosity, can anyone explain why the spider can power the cabinet and bypass the spider speaker using the direct out when it's not in test mode?
